The bill advanced as a cloture vote, or a motion to limit debate as it moves to a final vote, according to Fox News.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told reporters after the vote, “Now that we are on the bill, we hope to reach an agreement with our Republican colleagues on amendments. For the information of senators. We are going to keep working on this bill until the job is done.”
A similar bill did not advance in the Senate.
A bipartisan border security bill that provided $70 billion for overseas aid failed in a vote of 49-50.
The bill would have provided $60 billion to Ukraine, $14 billion to Israel, and about $20 billion to the U.S. border.
