The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has edited its application for naturalization to give immigrants a “third gender” option called “X,” or “Another Gender Identity.”
“The 04/01/24 edition of Form N-400 will be the first USCIS form to include the X gender option,” reads a statement from USCIS. “Applicants filing this edition of Form N-400 on or after April 1, 2024, will have X immediately available as a gender option on their form.”
USCIS also announced the update on X.
In a policy alert for the “X” gender option, USCIS explained binary gender options created “significant barriers” for those identifying as something other than a man or woman.
“Limiting benefit requestors to binary gender options also creates administrative challenges for USCIS, where benefit requestors submit birth certificates and other official government-issued documents with a gender other than ‘M’ or ‘F,’” the policy alert noted.
