Zelenskyy Asks for More Ukraine Aid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to ask for more aid to Ukraine as it continues its war with Russia.

“I spoke with @SpeakerJohnson and thanked him personally, both parties, the American people, and President Biden for their critical support of Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.

“I briefed Speaker Johnson on the battlefield situation, specifically the dramatic increase in Russia’s air terror. Last week alone, 190 missiles, 140 ‘Shahed’ drones, and 700 guided aerial bombs were launched at Ukrainian cities and communities. Ukraine’s largest hydroelectric power plant has gone offline.”

He emphasizes that “quick passage of US aid to Ukraine by Congress is vital.”

While Johnson is not opposed to further aid to the country, he declared Ukraine aid will only come if it is paired with funding for the U.S. border.

“I reiterated to [Zelensky] that we stand with him and against Putin’s brutal invasion,” Johnson said in December. “The American people stand for freedom and they’re on the right side of this fight.”

“I have asked the White House since the day that I was handed the gavel as speaker for clarity. We need clear articulation of the strategy to allow Ukraine to win,” he continued. “And thus far, their responses have been insufficient, they have not provided us the clarity and the detail that we requested over and over since literally 24 hours after I was handed the gavel as Speaker of the House.”

“What the Biden administration seems to be asking for is billions of additional dollars with no appropriate oversight, no clear strategy to win, and none of the answers that I think the American people are owed,” he stated. “The border is an absolute catastrophe. And this is because of the policies of this White House and this administration.”
