New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the state will now permit migrants with federal work authorization to seek thousands of temporary government positions, marking a significant shift in policy, as reported by Politico.
“We have 10,000 openings in the New York State workforce,” Hochul stated last week, as cited by New York’s Spectrum News. “These are all legal people.”
This move makes New York the first state in the United States to relax eligibility requirements for migrants to apply for government employment. Hochul aims to fill approximately 4,000 entry-level roles within state agencies, including clerical, technical support, repair, and food service positions.
In addition to allowing non-citizens to apply, Hochul’s administration is streamlining certain requirements such as education qualifications, English language proficiency, and certification.
“I’m anxious to get this moving quickly,” Hochul expressed during a press conference in Albany. “When we get them approved, we can get them matched to jobs.”
