U.S. Universities Used ‘How to Blow Up A Pipeline’ Book

Several universities required that students read the 2021 book “How to Blow Up A Pipeline,” according to a report from The Daily Wire.

“In this lyrical manifesto, noted climate scholar (and saboteur of SUV tires and coal mines) Andreas Malm makes an impassioned call for the climate movement to escalate its tactics in the face of ecological collapse,” a description for the book reads. “We need, he argues, to force fossil fuel extraction to stop—with our actions, with our bodies, and by defusing and destroying its tools. We need, in short, to start blowing up some oil pipelines.”

“Offering a counter-history of how mass popular change has occurred, from the democratic revolutions overthrowing dictators to the movement against apartheid and for women’s suffrage, Malm argues that the strategic acceptance of property destruction and violence has been the only route for revolutionary change,” it continues.

A University of California, Berkeley course, Geography & Interactive Biology, utilized the book, according to the report.

The course focsues on the “scientific practice of modern botanical taxonomy as a colonial formation that conditions our modern relations,” according to a guide.

Other universities that required the book include: City University of New York, Arizona State University, University of California, San Diego, University of Washington, Illinois State University, and Ohio State University.

The New York Times interviewed Malm on his “climate radicalism,” noting that “it’s hard to think that deaths don’t become inevitable if there is more sabotage.”

“Sure, if you have a thousand pipeline explosions per year, if it takes on that extreme scale,” Malm said. “But we are some distance from that, unfortunately.”

He added that he wants “sabotage to happen on a much larger scale than it does now. I can’t guarantee that it won’t come with accidents. But what do I know? I haven’t personally blown up a pipeline, and I can’t foretell the future.”

American Faith reported that UC San Diego further pushed climate radicalism by requiring undergraduate students to complete a one-quarter course about climate change.

“The establishment of this new graduation requirement for incoming first-year students, beginning fall 2024, is designed to empower our students with the knowledge and skills needed to confront the urgent global challenge of climate change,” reads the announcement.

According to the announcement, the development “does not increase the number of courses required for graduation,” as the climate change education requirement “will overlap with general education or Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) courses, as well as courses that apply to major and minor requirements.”
