{"id":9948,"date":"2024-02-15T15:15:32","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T09:45:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/15\/israeli-hiker-discovers-2800-year-old-seal-dating-to-time-of-solomons-temple-in-2-kings\/"},"modified":"2024-02-15T15:15:32","modified_gmt":"2024-02-15T09:45:32","slug":"israeli-hiker-discovers-2800-year-old-seal-dating-to-time-of-solomons-temple-in-2-kings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/15\/israeli-hiker-discovers-2800-year-old-seal-dating-to-time-of-solomons-temple-in-2-kings\/","title":{"rendered":"Israeli Hiker Discovers 2,800-Year-Old Seal Dating to Time of Solomon&#8217;s Temple in 2 Kings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>An Israeli hiker who set out on a venture recently to enjoy nature uncovered more than warm sunshine &#8212; he also stumbled upon a rare archaeological treasure.<\/p>\n<p>Erez Avrahamov, 45, was hiking in the Tabor Stream Nature Reserve in northern Israel when he saw an unusual deep orange object on the ground.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI had two days off from IDF reserves service, and I decided to take advantage of the sunny days to hike,\u201d Avrahamov said, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AntiquitiesEN\/posts\/pfbid028uDtHYo6vbEpd5gmPw9XyKMkWJ3ng2HJArT8qgncuRgtgDKFzxW6ryoCt88kbEFjl\">Israel Antiquities Authority<\/a> news release. \u201cWhile walking, I saw something shiny on the ground, and at first, I thought it was a bead or an orange stone. When I picked it up, I noticed that it was engraved like a scarab or beetle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><picture>&#13;<source type=\"image\/webp\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/media.swncdn.com\/via\/images\/2024\/02\/14\/34588\/34588-417690778696113146030173728332183219242312n_source_file.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fic fr-dii img-responsive lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/media.swncdn.com\/via\/images\/2024\/02\/14\/34588\/34588-417690778696113146030173728332183219242312n_source_file.jpg\" alt=\"An ancient orange seal of Solomon shaped like a scarab beetle\"\/><\/source><\/picture><\/p>\n<p>Avrahamov contacted the Israel Antiquities Authority, which &#8212; upon inspection &#8212; told him it was a 2,800-year-old Assyrian seal, or scarab, dating to the time of Solomon\u2019s temple. The seal likely was used around the time the Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom of Israel &#8212; events that are described in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/2-kings\/\">2 Kings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The seal has the appearance of an orange insect and depicts a winged creature on the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Nir Distelfeld of the Israel Antiquities Authority was the first to receive a call from Avrahamov.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him to take a good look at the other side of the scarab &#8212; the flat side &#8212; and check if it was also engraved,\u201d Distelfeld said. \u201cI immediately heard exclamations of excitement on the phone, and he told me that he could see a figure or image.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><picture>&#13;<source type=\"image\/webp\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/media.swncdn.com\/via\/images\/2024\/02\/14\/34587\/34587-4188059846961131260301756180590851591999167n_source_file.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fic fr-dii img-responsive lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/media.swncdn.com\/via\/images\/2024\/02\/14\/34587\/34587-4188059846961131260301756180590851591999167n_source_file.jpg\" alt=\"The engraved underside of an ancient scarab-shaped Solomonic seal\"\/><\/source><\/picture><\/p>\n<p>Othmar Keel, an emeritus professor at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, said the object is made of a \u201csemi-precious stone called carnelian\u201d and depicts \u201ceither a mythical griffin creature or a galloping winged horse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other scarabs like it have been dated to the eighth century B.C.<\/p>\n<p>It was found \u201cat the foot of Tel Rekhesh, one of the most important tells in Galilee,\u201d Distelfeld said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe site has been identified as \u2018Anaharat,\u2019 a town within the territory of the tribe of Issachar (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/joshua\/19-19.html\">Joshua 19:19<\/a>),\u201d Distelfeld added.<\/p>\n<p>Scarab seals were shaped like dung beetles, the Israel Antiquities Authority said.<\/p>\n<p>Itzik Paz, an archaeologist for the Israel Antiquities Authority who excavated at Tel Rekhesh, described it as \u201cone of the most important finds\u201d ever found at the site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that time, a large fortress stood on the tell which was apparently under Assyrian control, the empire that was responsible for the destruction of the Northern Kingdom of Israel,\u201d Paz said. \u201cIt is therefore quite possible that the scarab, discovered at the foot of the tell, testifies to the presence of Assyrian (or possibly Babylonian) administration at the site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Images credit: \u00a9Israel Antiquities Authority<\/em><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><em>Michael Foust has covered the intersection of faith and news for 20 years.
