\"\"(Des Moines Register)\u00a0\u2014 A Mississippi man who admitted to\u00a0destroying a statue\u00a0of the pagan idol Baphomet at the Iowa Capitol has been charged with a hate crime.<\/p>\n

The statue was part of a display organized by the Satanic Temple of Iowa under state rules allowing religious displays in the Iowa Capitol during the holidays. The installation\u00a0drew strong criticism\u00a0from state and national leaders, including\u00a0Gov. Kim Reynolds\u00a0and Republican presidential candidate\u00a0Ron DeSantis. On Dec. 14, the centerpiece of the display, a figure depicting the horned deity Baphomet, was \u201cdestroyed beyond repair,\u201d according to the Satanic Temple of Iowa.<\/p>\n

Michael Cassidy, a former congressional candidate from Mississippi,\u00a0was charged the following day\u00a0with fourth-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor. The Lauderdale, Mississippi, man told the conservative website The Sentinel that \u201cMy conscience is held captive to the word of God, not to bureaucratic decree. And so I acted.\u201d<\/p>\n
