The European Institute for Gender Equality, a group within the European Union (EU), has released a document<\/a> describing \u201cinclusive\u201d communication.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis toolkit provides guidelines for the use of gender-sensitive language in writing,\u201d the document reads. \u201cAlthough it provides tips and examples for the English language, the underlying principles for gender-sensitive writing are universal and remain relevant when using other languages.\u201d<\/p>\n

In discussing how to avoid stereotypes within inanimate objects, the report says, \u201cAssigning a gender to an inanimate object by using gendered pronouns to discuss it applies cultural connotations to characteristics. These connotations are related to gender stereotypes and help to perpetuate them.\u201d<\/p>\n

For example, instead of saying, \u201cThe ship slipped her moorings,\u201d the document suggests saying, \u201cThe ship slipped its moorings.\u201d<\/p>\n

The document also encourages people to refrain from \u201cderogatory\u201d adjectives often associated with women.<\/p>\n

Instead of saying an individual is \u201cshrill,\u201d the report suggests describing one\u2019s voice as \u201chigh-pitched\u201d or \u201cgrating.\u201d<\/p>\n

The document also calls for people to use the latest version of emojis to use the most gender-inclusive and sensitive choices available.<\/p>\n

Rather than using the traditional pronouns of \u201che\u201d and \u201cshe,\u201d the report includes a section of \u201cgender-neutral pronouns,\u201d such as, \u201cze,\u201d \u201chir,\u201d \u201chirs,\u201d and \u201chirself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Discussing \u201csubordination\u201d and \u201ctrivialisation,\u201d the gender equality group writes, \u201cYou should be aware of the word order of your phrases and make sure that you are not always putting the male version first.\u201d<\/p>\n

In reviewing the material of the document, the authors include a list of \u201cgendered nouns\u201d and their alternatives.<\/p>\n

For instance, instead of saying, \u201cman,\u201d the document recommends saying, \u201cperson, individual,\u201d and \u201chuman being.\u201d Rather than using the term \u201cmanpower,\u201d one should say, \u201cworkforce\u201d or \u201chuman power.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of using the term \u201cbrotherhood,\u201d one should use the term, \u201ckinship\u201d or \u201ccommunity.\u201d<\/p>\n
