A Massachusetts Supreme Court Justice denied a petition to ban former President Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot just one week after the Massachusetts State Ballot Law Commission\u00a0rejected\u00a0<\/a>a challenge to ban him from the 2024 primary ballot.<\/p>\n A civil rights group and local law firm alleged that\u00a0Trump should not be listed on the ballot\u00a0because he \u201cviolated\u201d a Constitutional clause that says anyone who \u201cengaged in insurrection or rebellion\u201d can\u2019t be president.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe believe that Mr. Trump\u2019s candidacy for this office and placement on the Massachusetts ballot violates the Constitution, so we are challenging the constitutionality,\u201d said Shannon Liss-Riordan, an attorney for the challengers. \u201cIt is the job of this commission to hear objections to the legality of placement of candidates on the ballot.\u201d<\/p>\n The group listed Section 3 of the US Constitution\u2019s 14th Amendment, which states public officials who have \u201cengaged in insurrection or rebellion against\u201d may be disqualified from public office.<\/p>\n Supreme Judicial Court Justice Frank Gaziano denied the petition, writing in his decision that the legal challenges have \u201ccome too soon.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIf there is any question whether the commission has the authority or jurisdiction to consider the petitioners\u2019 objections regarding Trump\u2019s eligibility to appear on the general election ballot, that question will not become ripe until, and if, he is selected as his party\u2019s nominee for President,\u201d Gaziano said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
