A member of Rhode Island\u2019s North Kingstown School District suggested schools should \u201cnever\u201d inform parents of their child\u2019s gender identity struggles.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn parental right to information, I don\u2019t think parents should be notified,\u201d the individual said. \u201cSimply because society assumes that every child has a well-meaning family. Sometimes the worst thing you can do is involve the parent into some of these issues, based on their own beliefs and their own cultures, and that will cause that student to commit suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you tell a student who\u2019s trusted you, who\u2019s come out to say, \u2018I\u2019m lesbian,\u2019 and you go back and tell the parent, that child has no faith in that school system ever again, and will never come forward with any information.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMy point would be that we never notify parents on these issues,\u201d the board member added. \u201cUnless the child\u2019s life is in danger. Then we have to err on the side of implied consent, that if we need to, we have to.\u201d<\/p>\n
