{"id":7057,"date":"2024-01-27T11:23:18","date_gmt":"2024-01-27T05:53:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/27\/senators-write-to-nih-after-group-removes-lengthen-life-from-stated-goals\/"},"modified":"2024-01-27T11:23:18","modified_gmt":"2024-01-27T05:53:18","slug":"senators-write-to-nih-after-group-removes-lengthen-life-from-stated-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/27\/senators-write-to-nih-after-group-removes-lengthen-life-from-stated-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"Senators Write to NIH After Group Removes &#8216;Lengthen Life&#8217; From Stated Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_82\">\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<p>Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/01.24.24-Rubio-Duckworth-Letter-to-NIH-re-Proposed-Change-in-Mission-Statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), imploring them to maintain its goal of \u201clengthening life\u201d after it proposed to change its mission statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn August 25, 2023, your agency released a proposed change to its mission statement that would, among other things, remove \u2018lengthen life\u2019 from NIH\u2019s stated goals,\u201d the senators wrote in the letter. \u201cWe write to express concern about the potential effects of this change and to request information as to why this change was made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The senators described that the change may be due to the rise of assisted suicide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmid the rising openness of some countries, such as Canada and the Netherlands, as well as a handful of states toward physician-assisted suicide, we are concerned that eliminating the stated goal of lengthening life within the NIH\u2019s mission statement without explanation or justification could have a negative impact on people\u2019s existing attitudes towards the quality of life of people with disabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noting that a survey found that \u201cover 80 percent of U.S. physicians who responded said they believe people with a significant disability have a worse quality of life than nondisabled people,\u201d Rubio and Duckworth warned that medical professionals may discriminate among patients in their recommendation of physician-assisted suicide.<\/p>\n<p>The senators have requested information from the NIH in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhat motivated your decision to remove \u2018lengthen life\u2019 from the NIH mission statement?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWere outside groups consulted in the decision-making process? If so, which organizations, and what were their recommendations?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat, if any, effect will deleting the phrase \u2018lengthen life\u2019 have on the work of the NIH in its research and grant-making priorities? What guidance will be provided to program officers and other relevant personnel?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Eleven U.S. states <a href=\"https:\/\/americanfaith.com\/vermont-sees-assisted-suicides-quadruple-over-two-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">offer<\/a> assisted suicide, including California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Why is the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NIH?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NIH<\/a> considering removing &#8220;lengthen life&#8221; from their mission statement?
