The CCM artist who soared to No. 1 with the hit song Who I Am<\/em> says God rescued him from an addiction to drugs and alcohol and that a simple invitation to church may have saved his life.<\/p>\n Ben Fuller\u2019s Who I Am<\/em> reached No. 1 in 2022 on the Billboard Christian Airplay Chart, while his latest hit, If I Got Jesus<\/em>, is currently in the Top 40.\u00a0<\/p>\n But five years ago, Fuller was a country singer in Nashville who was searching for fame and fortune and — as he puts it — writing tunes about \u201cback roads and beer drinking.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI was at a place of complete despair,\u201d Fuller told Christian Headlines. \u201cI mean, I was drinking 19 beers a night.\u201d<\/p>\n He was also doing drugs. His life changed when a Nashville-area family, originally from Vermont, invited him over to dinner. Fuller, too, is from Vermont.<\/p>\n \u201cI had moved down here [to Nashville] for country music. And I got lost on Broadway,\u201d he said of the famous downtown area. \u201cAnd I was singing about all the wrong things and drinking heavily and on drugs — and you name it. This family had me over for a meal. And at the end of the meal, they asked me if I’d come to church with them the next day. And I just said, \u2018Yes.\u2019 I said, \u2018Sure, whatever, I’ll go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
