{"id":674,"date":"2023-08-12T20:25:33","date_gmt":"2023-08-12T20:25:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2023\/08\/12\/schools-allow-students-to-confidentially-address-gender-identity\/"},"modified":"2023-08-12T20:25:33","modified_gmt":"2023-08-12T20:25:33","slug":"schools-allow-students-to-confidentially-address-gender-identity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2023\/08\/12\/schools-allow-students-to-confidentially-address-gender-identity\/","title":{"rendered":"Schools Allow Students to Confidentially Address Gender Identity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"article_content\">\n<header>\n<div class=\"article-byline has-tools\">\n<div class=\"article-tools\"><a href=\"#cp-talk\" class=\"has-number talk-cp-255039\" data-scrollto=\".viafoura\" aria-label=\"Go to comments\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.christianpost.com\/assets\/img\/icon\/chat-rect.svg\" alt=\"\"\/><span class=\"number\"\/><\/a><a href=\"\" class=\"js-share\" aria-label=\"Share\" id=\"share-btn\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.christianpost.com\/assets\/img\/icon\/share-outline.svg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<figure class=\"img-box align-center center\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><picture width=\"760\" height=\"507\"><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.christianpost.com\/images\/cache\/image\/14\/65\/146561_w_760_507.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.christianpost.com\/images\/cache\/image\/14\/65\/146561_w_760_507.jpg\" class=\"type:primaryImage\" width=\"760\" height=\"507\"\/><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"caption\"><span class=\"photo-des\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A parental advocacy group is drawing attention to an Alaska school district policy that it says instructs staff on how to help students conceal their gender confusion from their parents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Parents Defending Education is <a href=\"https:\/\/defendinged.org\/incidents\/anchorage-school-district-has-policy-to-keep-gender-identity-of-students-a-secret-from-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warning parents<\/a> about an Anchorage School District\u2019s policy titled \u201cWorking with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Students and Employees,\u201d\u00a0 which the district revised in August 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The policy states that schools can conceal a student&#8217;s confusion about their sexual identity from their parents, arguing that, for some students at the secondary education level, notifying the parents can present a risk to the student if their parents don\u2019t support the transition (changing their name while at school, or secretly taking puberty blockers and opposite-sex hormones).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrior to notification of any parent or guardian regarding the transition process, school staff should work closely with the student to assess the degree to which, if any, the parent\/guardian will be involved in the process, considering at all times the health, well-being, and safety of the transitioning student,\u201d reads the policy, a copy of which was shared by the parents&#8217; rights group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Regarding elementary school students, the document states that it\u2019s usually parents or guardians who notify the school of their child\u2019s desire to identify as the opposite sex.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf school staff believes that a gender identity or expression issue is presenting itself and creating difficulty for the student at school, approaching parents about the issue is appropriate at the elementary level,\u201d the district policy continues. \u201cTogether, the family and school can then identify appropriate steps to support the student.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The policy allows students who identify as trans to enter bathrooms and locker rooms designated for the opposite sex (boys can enter girls&#8217; private spaces and vice versa) and can compete on sports teams that do not align with their biological sex.<\/p>\n<p>School employees and district administrative staff must also use a student&#8217;s chosen pronouns if they decide to identify as the opposite sex, according to the policy, but staff must use the student\u2019s actual name and pronouns when communicating with the child\u2019s parents or guardians unless told otherwise by the student or their parents.<\/p>\n<p>Students may also fill out a form to list includes their preferred name and pronouns and designate which single-sex bathroom or locker room they want to be allowed to enter. The form, signed by the student and their principal, is only accessible to those with a &#8220;legitimate need to know.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Anchorage School District did not respond to The Christian Post\u2019s request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/alaska-school-policy-administrators-hide-gender-identity-students-parents-watchdog-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>, Parents Defending Education Outreach Director Erika Sanzi noted that the Anchorage School District&#8217;s policies are similar to what the group has seen elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I see betrayal baked into these policies,\u201d Sanzi said. \u201cI&#8217;m a mother of three school-aged kids. I worked in schools for many years. When I was working in schools, there was never an expectation that I deceive parents or lie to parents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sanzi warned that the Alaska-based school district\u2019s policies are a \u201creal ethical problem,\u201d asserting that parents have a right to access school records that contain information about their child&#8217;s gender identity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, PDE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/school-scraps-male-female-terms-in-sex-ed-to-advance-equity.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spotlighted<\/a> a Vermont school district that told parents of fifth-grade students that it would refrain from using gendered terms like &#8220;boy&#8221; and &#8220;girl&#8221; during sex education lessons for \u201cequity\u201d purposes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In April of last year, two Massachusetts parents filed a lawsuit against the Ludlow School District, alleging that officials had encouraged their children to identify as the opposite sex without obtaining the parents&#8217; consent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Mark Mastroianni <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/judge-dismisses-parents-lawsuit-in-school-gender-identity-case.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dismissed<\/a> the parents&#8217; lawsuit in December, stating that it did not meet the &#8220;shocks-the-conscience&#8221; legal standard. However, the judge also called the school district&#8217;s policy for students self-identifying as the opposite sex &#8220;imperfect&#8221; and &#8220;flawed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article_credit\">\n<p>Samantha Kamman is a reporter for The Christian Post.
