Giatti<\/a><span class=\"quiet\">, Christian Post Reporter <time datetime=\"Friday, January 19, 2024\" itemprop=\"datePublished dateModified\">Friday, January 19, 2024<\/time><\/span><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<figure class=\"img-box align-center center\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><picture width=\"760\" height=\"507\"><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.christianpost.com\/images\/cache\/image\/14\/86\/148631_w_760_507.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.christianpost.com\/images\/cache\/image\/14\/86\/148631_w_760_507.jpg\" class=\"type:primaryImage\" width=\"760\" height=\"507\"\/><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"caption\"><span class=\"photo-des\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A flurry of media reports involving claims that hundreds of indigenous children were buried beneath Catholic schools across Canada has reportedly left nearly 100 churches vandalized or burned down.<\/p>\n<p>The attacks are linked to now-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/doubts-cast-on-claim-of-mass-grave-of-indigenous-children-in-canada.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">debunked<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/saskatchewan\/cowessess-marieval-indian-residential-school-news-1.6078375\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>, including one from a Canadian \u201cfirst nation\u201d group that alleged more than 750 bodies were found buried under a Catholic-run school in Canada&#8217;s Saskatchewan province.<\/p>\n<p>That report, which claimed there were 751 unmarked graves at a cemetery near the site of the former Marieval Indian Residential School, has since been <a href=\"https:\/\/thespectator.com\/topic\/lack-indigenous-mass-graves-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">debunked<\/a> after zero graves were excavated despite a two-year effort.<\/p>\n<p>Such claims sparked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/how-canadian-dioceses-are-responding-to-the-wave-of-church-arsons.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a wave of vandalism<\/a>\u00a0and arson attacks on Catholic and Protestant churches amid a rise in anti-Christian and anti-Catholic sentiment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the initial report in June 2021, 96 churches across Canada have been desecrated, destroyed or vandalized, <a href=\"https:\/\/tnc.news\/2024\/01\/02\/a-map-of-every-church-burnt-or-vandalized-since-the-residential-school-announcements3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according <\/a>to Canadian independent media outlet True North.<\/p>\n<p>Ranging in denomination from Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran and others, the targeted churches are located as far north as Yellowknife in Canada\u2019s Northwest Territories to Chopaka Catholic Church on the border between British Columbia and Washington state.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 33 church fires, Canadian investigators have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/church-fires-canada-1.7055838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared <\/a>24 to be arson cases so far, while 60 additional churches were vandalized across hundreds of miles, including 11 churches vandalized within hours on the night of June 30, 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Several of the attacks targeted church doctrine, signage or symbols, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An \u201cevery child matters\u201d display that was lit on fire Aug. 3, 2021, at St. Augustine of Canterbury Church in Brandon, Manitoba;<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Anti-Catholic messaging with the words &#8220;killer&#8221; and &#8220;racist&#8221; on the exterior of St. Andrew&#8217;s Cathedral in Victoria, B.C.;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A large cross that was cut down July 12, 2021, on Mount Tzouhalem located on Vancouver Island, B.C.; and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Messages written in red paint blaming Catholics for \u201cmurdering\u201d indigenous children at St. Peter&#8217;s Cathedral Basilica in London, Ontario.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While some reports about unmarked graves were later proven to be linked to official cemeteries that included the remains of many adults, members of Canada\u2019s political and media establishment were among those who voiced at least tacit support for the public outrage.<\/p>\n<p>Media outlets like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/mass-impact-from-discovery-of-graves\/article_5eb0c06b-e729-5d17-8ccf-d2b7b7fd8eae.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toronto Star<\/a> and The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2021\/05\/28\/canada-mass-grave-residential-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a> were forced to issue corrections after initially reporting the burial sites were \u201cmass graves\u201d even as the investigation was still ongoing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gerald Butts, a Canadian political consultant who served as senior adviser to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau until 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gmbutts\/status\/1412471051519463428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted <\/a>that burning churches \u201cmay be understandable,\u201d while Naomi Sayers, executive director of the BC Civil Liberties Association, came under fire in July 2021 for <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8002314\/bccla-church-fire-tweet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">replying<\/a> \u201cBurn it all down\u201d to reports of Catholic churches being vandalized.<\/p>\n<p>Sayers later backtracked on her tweet, saying, \u201cBurn it all down. Doesn\u2019t literally mean, burn it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nesta Matthews, a radio host at a radio station in New Brunswick, called for the burning of all churches built on \u201cfirst nations\u201d land.<\/p>\n<p>Matthews <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/XBRch#selection-2977.51-2977.263\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>: \u201cBurn the churches down. Arrest any former staff that were actually there and any current staff that won\u2019t provide documentation. Sell everything they own in Canada and give it to survivors. Dismantle it completely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At one point, the Canadian prime minister, himself a Catholic, demanded that the pope come to his country and issue a formal apology for the mass graves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have spoken personally directly with His Holiness Pope Francis to press upon him how important it is not just that he makes an apology but that he makes an apology to indigenous Canadians on Canadian soil,\u201d Trudeau <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/trudeau-pope-must-apologize-after-nearly-1000-unmarked-graves-indigenous-children-found.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said <\/a>in June 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that the Catholic Church leadership is looking and very actively engaged in what next steps can be taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a 2022 trip to Canada, Francis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/pope-apologizes-to-native-canadians-for-residential-schools-abuse.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apologized<\/a> to indigenous communities in Canada.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"article_credit\">\n<p>Ian M.
