<\/source><\/picture>The latest \u201cvictimized\u201d class to air their grievances against America?<\/p>\n
Fat Liberationists.<\/p>\n
I mean, if\u00a0rational thinking,\u00a0delayed gratification, and\u00a0hard work\u00a0have all been\u00a0tagged<\/a>\u00a0as perilous attributes of \u201cwhiteness,\u201d what made you think that today\u2019s woke ideologues wouldn\u2019t wag their stubby fingers at healthy eaters next?<\/p>\n Well, the fingers they are a-wagging, and there is corporate support behind the new movement to boot.<\/p>\n The soap company Dove, for instance, recently\u00a0linked up<\/a>\u00a0with a 22-year-old college student named Zyahna Bryant to be the company\u2019s envoy for fat people. \u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cMy belief is that we should be centering the voices and the experiences of the most marginalized people and communities at all times,\u201d Bryant\u00a0started off<\/a>\u00a0in an Instagram video announcing her partnership with the beauty business.<\/p>\n \u201cSo, when I think about what fat liberation looks like to me, I think about centering the voices of those who live in and who maneuver through spaces and institutions in a fat body.\u201d<\/p>\n Bryant concluded her post with the message that fat liberation is something \u201cwe should all be talking about\u201d and\u00a0encouraged<\/a>\u00a0her followers join the #SizeFreedom campaign and \u201cshare your story.\u201d<\/p>\n Notice how these so-called \u201cmarginalized\u201d voices always end up with lucrative corporate deals?<\/p>\n Funny how that works.<\/p>\n In any event, if Zyahna Bryant sounds like your typical whiny leftist but with a sweet tooth, you\u2019d be correct.<\/p>\n She\u2019s thrown her weight behind the \u201cdefund the police\u201d\u00a0crusade<\/a>\u00a0put on by Black Lives Matter (BLM) and is likewise a big backer of racial preferences in college admissions.<\/p>\n Bryant\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0the Supreme Court as \u201cdoing nasty and evil work\u201d after striking down affirmative action and\u00a0intoned<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cpolicing as a system\/institution needs to be defunded \u2013 and cops should be removed from schools.\u201d<\/p>\n She also\u00a0instructed<\/a>\u00a0her followers during \u201cPride\u201d month (summer?) that \u201cit\u2019s not enough to say you support queer folks and gender-expansive people, your actions must also align with that declaration.\u201d<\/p>\n There are more political ramblings, but I\u2019m not sure you can stomach as many progressive hobbyhorses as she can.<\/p>\n Bottom line: The Left has an unsatiable appetite to, as film critic Christian Toto\u00a0observed<\/a>, \u201cmake America appear more [sinful] than it actually is and support efforts to right fictional wrongs.\u201d<\/p>\n And what could be more \u201cfictional\u201d than arguing for a new\u00a0elevated status\u00a0contingent upon the number of loyalty points one racks up at Pizza Hut. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Yet that\u2019s what\u2019s happening, so to speak.<\/p>\n What\u2019s clear is that if an agenda can fit into an \u201coppression narrative,\u201d the left will give it a platform, no matter how outlandish the claim is.<\/p>\n It\u2019s the reason why progressives are so hot on the concept of \u201cintersectionality\u201d \u2014 because it allows them to take disparate groups and toss them into the same victimization bowl of soup.<\/p>\n That\u2019s why \u201c\u2018fat is a feminist issue,\u2019\u201d as the far-left Ms. Magazine put it.<\/p>\n And why \u201cfat,\u201d\u00a0to them<\/a>, is \u201calso a queer issue, and a racialized issue, and an issue of class.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cFatness is inseparable from all other intersections of identity.\u201d<\/p>\n This, in a nutshell, is wokeism \u2014 a nasty belief system that tries to convince Americans that they are in war with each other based on certain attributes, notably skin color, gender, sexuality, and evidently body mass index.<\/p>\n Public Enemy No. 1 in this war, let\u2019s not forget, is the straight, white, Christian male. He\u2019s inevitably the bad guy, no matter what.<\/p>\n Overall, though, the woke crowd doesn\u2019t approach obesity from the perspective of poor dietary choices or physical inactivity.<\/p>\n Rather, it\u2019s yet another example of repressive Western traditions \u2014 and more fodder for why those traditions must be torn down and built anew.<\/p>\n Okay, whatever.<\/p>\n The nagging question I have throughout the sermonizing is this: What exactly are these folks being liberated from \u2014 a long and healthy life?<\/p>\n The\u00a0Journal of the American Heart Association\u00a0released<\/a>\u00a0a study this month that revealed how \u201cobesity-related cardiovascular disease deaths tripled between 1999 and 2020 in the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n TRIPLED!<\/p>\n \u201cThe number of people with obesity is rising in every country across the world,\u201d warned Zahra Raisi-Estabragh, a cardiologist and the primary author of the report.<\/p>\n He added that \u201cour study is the first to demonstrate that this increasing burden of obesity is translating into rising heart disease deaths.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n I\u2019ll ask it again \u2014 what is the \u201cliberation\u201d play here?<\/p>\n To\u00a0Make Heart Attacks Great Again?<\/p>\n Unfortunately, these mortality totals are likely to increase further because the percentage of obese adults have\u00a0jumped<\/a>\u00a0within the last year alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n The sad irony here is that obesity is a \u201cracialized issue,\u201d but not as the left portrays it.<\/p>\n The\u00a0Journal of the\u00a0American Heart Association\u00a0noted<\/a> that \u201cobesity-related cardiovascular disease deaths were higher among black individuals compared with any other racial group\u201d analyzed.<\/p>\n And when you drill down deeper into the data, you\u2019ll find that \u201cBlack women had the highest rates of obesity-related heart disease deaths than all others in the study.\u201d<\/p>\n Black women like Zyahna Bryant, Dove\u2019s fat ambassador. \u00a0<\/p>\n Of course, not everyone has to look like Tom Brady or his supermodel ex, Gisele Bundchen.<\/p>\n But we don\u2019t have to eat our way to an early grave either.<\/p>\n It\u2019s important to remember that\u00a0obsessional\u00a0attitudes toward food \u2014 gluttony, in particular \u2014 is\u00a0still\u00a0a cardinal sin (Proverbs 23:19-21, Philippians 3:19).<\/p>\n As Christians, we should love everyone, regardless of their size and weight.<\/p>\n However, we shouldn\u2019t normalize any sinful behavior, let alone one that will kill people before their time and render them sick and miserable while they\u2019re here on earth.<\/p>\n Originally published at the Standing for Freedom Center.\u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n Jason Mattera is a New York Times bestselling\u00a0author<\/a>\u00a0and Emmy-nominated journalist.
