Rev. Paul-Gordon Chandler, bishop of the Episcopal Church in Wyoming, was recently placed on administrative leave amid a \u201cpending Title IV allegations against him,\u201d according to a Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.episcopalchurch.org\/publicaffairs\/bishop-of-wyoming-placed-on-administrative-leave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from the Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Mary Gray-Reeves, the Episcopal Church House of Bishops vice president, issued the disciplinary action against Chandler while serving as \u201cpresiding bishop-designate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gray-Reeves assumed the role of presiding bishop-designate while Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry continues to recover from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/episcopal-church-leader-released-from-hospital-following-surgery.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surgery he underwent<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis restriction will remain in effect until further notice,\u201d stated the public affairs office.<\/p>\n<p>Although the reason for the disciplinary action has not been disclosed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.episcopalnewsservice.org\/2023\/10\/16\/wyoming-bishop-placed-on-leave-while-he-faces-allegations-under-title-iv-disciplinary-canons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Episcopal News Service<\/a> reported Monday that a diocesan standing committee letter to the regional body mentioned \u201can alleged indiscretion with a member of our diocesan team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Title IV Canons of the Episcopal Church involve the processes for which to oversee formal accusations made against clergy accused of violating ecclesiastical laws.<\/p>\n<p>The canons were approved at the Episcopal Church General Convention of 1994, taking effect on New Year\u2019s Day 1996 and creating a standard for all dioceses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrior to the fundamental changes in how the church handled discipline, decisions surrounding clerics were often made unilaterally by bishops or by an ecclesiastical trial court,\u201d states an Episcopal Church <a href=\"https:\/\/www.titleiv.org\/general-education-and-best-practices\/history-and-background-of-title-iv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> on the canons.<\/p>\n<p>A process revision was made in 2009, which \u201cextended pastoral care opportunities and requirements to all parties and set the tone for future revisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe General Convention of 2009 was a watershed year for the modern Title IV, but it was not the end of the evolution of the disciplinary canons,\u201d the denomination acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Title IV processes are carried out within the church, the need for further revisions comes to light.
