{"id":2228,"date":"2023-09-29T14:15:07","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T14:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2023\/09\/29\/reaffiliation-policy-instituted-by-united-methodist-conference\/"},"modified":"2023-09-29T14:15:07","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T14:15:07","slug":"reaffiliation-policy-instituted-by-united-methodist-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2023\/09\/29\/reaffiliation-policy-instituted-by-united-methodist-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Reaffiliation&#8217; Policy Instituted by United Methodist Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"article_content\">\n<header>\n<div class=\"article-byline has-tools\">\n<div class=\"article-tools\"><a href=\"#cp-talk\" class=\"has-number talk-cp-255761\" data-scrollto=\".viafoura\" aria-label=\"Go to comments\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.christianpost.com\/assets\/img\/icon\/chat-rect.svg\" alt=\"\"\/><span class=\"number\"\/><\/a><a href=\"\" class=\"js-share\" aria-label=\"Share\" id=\"share-btn\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.christianpost.com\/assets\/img\/icon\/share-outline.svg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<figure class=\"img-box align-center center\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><picture width=\"760\" height=\"504\"><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.christianpost.com\/images\/cache\/image\/13\/49\/134900_w_760_504.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.christianpost.com\/images\/cache\/image\/13\/49\/134900_w_760_504.jpg\" class=\"type:primaryImage\" width=\"760\" height=\"504\"\/><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"caption\"><span class=\"photo-des\">View of the stage during the United Methodist Church&#8217;s special session General Conference inside the Dome at America&#8217;s Center in St. Louis, Missouri, on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019.<\/span> | <span class=\"credit\">United Methodist News Service\/Kathleen Barry<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A regional body of The United Methodist Church has implemented a reaffiliation policy for congregations that have left amid the denomination-wide schism over homosexuality.<\/p>\n<p>The UMC Alabama-West Florida Conference implemented the new reaffiliation policy earlier this month, acting off of a resolution passed at its annual session in June.<\/p>\n<p>Conference Communications Director Mary Catherine Phillips told The Christian Post on Thursday that the conference had no reaffiliation process before the policy was introduced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United Methodist Book of Discipline, paragraph 259, provides guidance for new churches in the UMC but the financial pieces of reentry were not outlined, so it would have been on a case-by-case basis,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe welcome other conferences to follow this process as it gives options to churches who might have rushed into a decision and might not have fully understood the ramifications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few decades, the UMC has been engaged in a divisive debate over whether to allow the blessing of same-sex unions and the ordination of people in same-sex romantic relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Many progressives in church leadership have refused to follow or enforce the rules in the UMC Book of Discipline that ban same-sex unions and the ordination of gay clergy, which has drawn the ire of theologically conservative churches and leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the past two years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/over-6000-umc-churches-granted-dissafiliation-amid-schism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 6,000 congregations<\/a> have disaffiliated from what was once the second-largest Protestant denomination in the U.S., taking advantage of the provisions under Paragraph 2553 of the UMC Book of Discipline, which expires at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips directed CP to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awfumc.org\/newsdetail\/17660919\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent report<\/a> by the conference, which noted that the measure was originally introduced by Nathan Attwood, senior pastor at First United Methodist Church of Marianna, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the very day that the Prodigal Son left home, the father began to make preparations for his return, and so it is our responsibility as followers of Jesus Christ, as the spiritual home of the churches who have left, to make sure that the light is on, there\u2019s a plate in the oven, and that we are ready to receive them with open arms,\u201d said Attwood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen our denomination divided in 1844 over the issue of slavery, the deepest division in our history, it took 95 years for reconciliation to take place; and that process is still ongoing.
