The 48-year-old Brand, who has over 6.6 million subscribers <\/a>on YouTube, was suspended after purportedly violating the platform\u2019s \u201ccreator responsibility policy,\u201d the New York Times reported <\/a>Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\nThe suspension came after several British media outlets The Times, Sunday Times and Channel 4 Dispatches<\/a> publishedallegations of sexual assault and \u201cemotional abuse\u201d from five alleged victims \u2014 including four of whom were anonymous \u2014 during the height of his movie career from 2006 to 2013.<\/p>\nOne report from The Sunday Times<\/a> alleged Brand assaulted a then-16-year-old girl \u2014 over the age of consent in the U.K. \u2014 during a brief \u201cemotionally and sexually abusive\u201d relationship, while another victim told The Times that Brand raped her at his Los Angeles home in 2012.<\/p>\nIn what ultimately was his last YouTube video <\/a>before the suspension, Brand denied the allegations, saying they \u201cpertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream media, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies. And as I\u2019ve written about extensively in my books I was very, very promiscuous.\u00a0<\/p>\n\u201cNow, during that time of promiscuity the relationships I had were absolutely always consensual,\u201d he added. \u201cI was always transparent about that then, almost too transparent, and I\u2019m being transparent about it now as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the video, Brand said he received two \u201cextremely disturbing\u201d notes from an unidentified corporate media TV company\u201d and a newspaper listing what he called \u201ca litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks as well as some pretty stupid stuff,\u201d including that he \u201cshouldn’t be able to attack mainstream media narratives.\u201d<\/p>\n
While acknowledging the allegations were \u201cvery serious,\u201d Brand added that he\u2019s concerned that what he described as \u201ccoordinated media attacks\u201d closely resembled, for example, the media backlash<\/a> to podcaster Joe Rogan\u2019s comments about the drug ivermectin as a treatment for COVID-19.\u00a0<\/p>\nHe also pointed to a number of corporate media articles <\/a>painting Brand as a \u201cconspiracy theorist\u201d<\/a> for speaking out about the potential health risks linked to some of the coronavirus injections.<\/p>\n\u201cI know that a year ago there was a spate of articles, \u2018Russell Brand\u2019s a conspiracy theorist,\u2019 \u2018Russell Brand’s right-wing,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI’m aware of news media making phone calls, sending letters, to people I know for ages and ages.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s been clear to me or at least it feels to me like there’s a serious and concerted agenda to control these kind of spaces and these kind of voices, and I mean my voice along with your voice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brand\u2019s recent YouTube offerings include an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, in which the two discussed corporate media \u201crhetoric,\u201d along with videos on Bill Gates, former President Barack Obama, the COVID-19 lockdowns, Ukraine, and the Hawaii wildfires.<\/p>\n
Despite his recent suspension from YouTube, Brand maintains a healthy presence on alternative video hosting site Rumble with about 1.4 million followers. The actor also has another nearly 15 million followers on X and Instagram.<\/p>\n
While gaining a reputation early in his career for vulgarity and crude humor, Brand said in a 2018 interview <\/a>that he believes \u201cthe teachings of Christ are more relevant now than they’ve ever been.\u201d<\/p>\nIt\u2019s a dramatic change of heart for Brand, who once said <\/a>he believed the Bible was more of a symbolic text than the divine Word of God and was even rumored to have a \u201cmessiah complex.\u201d<\/p>\n“Have you considered that the Bible, like all religious doctrine, may be allegorical and symbolic to direct us towards one holy entity of love as opposed to a specific \u2026 text to direct the behavior of human beings?” Brand said on his show in 2012<\/a>. “The Bible wasn’t specifically written by a cosmic entity!
