{"id":16222,"date":"2024-03-31T23:53:01","date_gmt":"2024-03-31T18:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/31\/harvard-sees-drop-in-applications-following-antisemitism-controversy\/"},"modified":"2024-03-31T23:53:01","modified_gmt":"2024-03-31T18:23:01","slug":"harvard-sees-drop-in-applications-following-antisemitism-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/31\/harvard-sees-drop-in-applications-following-antisemitism-controversy\/","title":{"rendered":"Harvard Sees Drop in Applications Following Antisemitism Controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Harvard University\u00a0aw a 5% drop in admission applications following its antisemitism and plagiarism controversies.<\/p>\n<p>The university published data on its incoming Class of 2028 last week, announcing the acceptance of 1,937 students from an application amount of 54,008.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2023, the Harvard early application pool saw a 17% decline from the year before, receiving 7,921 early applications, compared to 9,553 applications in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Harvard\u2019s antisemitism task force leader <a href=\"https:\/\/americanfaith.com\/harvard-antisemitism-task-force-leader-calls-israel-regime-of-apartheid\/\">once<\/a> called Israel a \u201cregime of apartheid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek Penslar, a Jewish history professor, was appointed to the position by President Alan Garber on January 19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReports of antisemitic and Islamophobic acts on our campus have grown, and the sense of belonging among these groups has been undermined,\u201d the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/president\/news\/2024\/announcement-of-presidential-task-forces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announcement<\/a>\u00a0read at the time. \u201cWe need to understand why and how that is happening\u2014and what more we might do to prevent it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI write today to announce two presidential task forces: one devoted to combating antisemitism and one devoted to combating Islamophobia and anti-Arab bias.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Penslar was one of almost 3,000 people signing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/israel-elephant-in-the-room\/aug-23-elephant-in-the-room-petition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a>\u00a0calling Israel an apartheid regime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere cannot be democracy for Jews in Israel as long as Palestinians live under a regime of apartheid, as Israeli legal experts have described it,\u201d the letter says. \u201cIndeed, the ultimate purpose of the judicial overhaul is to tighten restrictions on Gaza, deprive Palestinians of equal rights both beyond the Green Line and within it, annex more land, and ethnically cleanse all territories under Israeli rule of their Palestinian population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican Jews have long been at the forefront of social justice causes, from racial equality to abortion rights, but have paid insufficient attention to the elephant in the room: Israel\u2019s long-standing occupation that, we repeat, has yielded a regime of apartheid,\u201d the letter added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Israel has grown more right-wing and come under the spell of the current government\u2019s messianic, homophobic, and misogynistic agenda, young American Jews have grown more and more alienated from it.
