Two workers had been rescued, The Baltimore Sun reported.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency crews were searching for survivors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Video of the incident shows the lights on a container ship flickering on and off as dark smoke billows from its stack moments before it collides with a support structure. Within seconds, the bridge collapses into the river at about 1:20 a.m. local time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, the bridge carried an average of 34,000 vehicles a day for a total of 12.4 million for the year, according to <em>The Baltimore Sun<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Maryland Gov. Wes Moore issued a statement Tuesday saying he was in close contact with local and national officials. He declared a state of emergency.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">NEW: Gov. Ben Cardin told <em>The Baltimore Sun<\/em> that \u201cwhat\u2019s been indicated is the vessel lost power, and when you lose power you lose steering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut they\u2019re doing a full investigation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The tragedy could have been much worse, Moore said at a news conference. That\u2019s because the ship\u2019s crew issued a \u201cmayday\u201d signal, thus allowing Maryland Transportation Authority Police on the bridge above to prevent other cars from driving onto it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese people are heroes,\u201d Moore said Tuesday morning. \u201cThey saved lives last night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott urged the public to pray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an unthinkable tragedy,\u201d Scott said at a news conference. \u201cWe have to, first and foremost pray for all of those who are impacted, those families, pray for our first responders and thank them &#8212; all of them working together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Image credit: \u00a9Getty Images \/ <a data-search-type=\"photographer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/search\/photographer?photographer=Win%20McNamee\" rel=\"nofollow\">Win McNamee<\/a> \/\u00a0<\/em><span data-testid=\"artistTitle\"><em>Staff<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><em>Michael Foust has covered the intersection of faith and news for 20 years.
