The teachers were informed they could not pray publicly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA school can prevent employees from getting distracted when they are supposed to be acting according to their official duties,\u201d ACLJ wrote, <a href=\"https:\/\/aclj.org\/religious-liberty\/aclj-files-federal-lawsuit-on-behalf-of-teacher-ordered-not-to-pray\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">describing<\/a> the case. \u201cBut what it cannot do is prevent school employees from expressing their religious faith at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA school cannot prohibit any religious expression where children might be present on the fear that children might participate or see the religious activity. The right of teachers to express their religious beliefs is too strong for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ACLJ sent a demand letter to the school, which appeared to agree to change the policy prohibiting public prayer. The school instead issued a new policy that remained \u201cblatantly unconstitutional,\u201d according to the legal group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrincipal Rounds indicated that he was prohibiting them from praying publicly because there was a possibility that students would potentially join in with the prayer,\u201d the <a href=\"http:\/\/media.aclj.org\/pdf\/Time-Stamped-Complaint_Redacted.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> reads, explaining the situation. \u201cAfter questions from the teachers, he reiterated that it was considered impermissible for the teachers to pray in public where students might see their conduct or be influenced by it, even if this prayer occurred when the teachers were not on school time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy prohibiting its employees from engaging in any prayer where students might see or from participating in religious activity, Katy ISD violated the ]Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act (TRFRA)]; no compelling interest justifies a prohibition of employee prayer and any interest Katy ISD may have can be achieved without prohibiting teachers from engaging in religious activity,\u201d the suit adds.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit seeks to ensure that the \u201cschool amends its policy to reflect what the Constitution actually requires,\u201d ACLJ said. \u201cThis school policy strips teachers and school employees of their fundamental right to express their faith freely and must be struck down.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A public school teacher was told she couldn\u2019t pray at the flagpole before school because students might see her.
