{"id":15553,"date":"2024-03-26T05:32:04","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T00:02:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/26\/hhs-to-spend-almost-800k-assessing-structural-racism-of-chronic-kidney-disease\/"},"modified":"2024-03-26T05:32:04","modified_gmt":"2024-03-26T00:02:04","slug":"hhs-to-spend-almost-800k-assessing-structural-racism-of-chronic-kidney-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/26\/hhs-to-spend-almost-800k-assessing-structural-racism-of-chronic-kidney-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"HHS to Spend Almost $800K Assessing &#8216;Structural Racism&#8217; of Chronic Kidney Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will provide Emory University nearly $800,000 to mitigate the \u201ceffects of structural racism on chronic kidney disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The grant runs from September 1, 2023, to June 30, 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Current chronic kidney disease treatment \u201cfails to attend to the role of structural racism,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/award\/ASST_NON_U01DK137269_7529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grant description<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur central hypothesis is that with substantial guidance from a community advisory board, comprehensive systems change implemented through an anti-racism lens will improve access to all steps of care along the [chronic kidney disease] continuum among African American patients, thereby decreasing existing racial inequities,\u201d the description adds.<\/p>\n<p>Two agencies within HHS are providing the grant, with $500,000 coming from the National Institute of Nursing Research and $290,955 coming from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease.<\/p>\n<p>The grant comes as several health entities are requiring employees to undergo training for \u201canti-racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The University of Washington Health in Seattle, Washington <a href=\"https:\/\/americanfaith.com\/university-of-washington-health-requires-white-employees-to-learn-antiracism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">requires<\/a> white employees to undergo diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training to make up for alleged inherent racism present in being white. White employees are to read articles explaining how to be \u201cantiracist, because being \u2018not racist\u2019 is not enough,\u201d according to documents shared\u00a0online.<\/p>\n<p>The Kentucky Board of Nursing also <a href=\"https:\/\/americanfaith.com\/nurses-in-kentucky-mandated-to-take-training-teaching-history-of-racism-in-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">instructed<\/a> health care workers to \u201crecognize the history of racism in healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order to lead to meaningful change, any exploration of implicit bias must be situated as part of a much larger conversation on racism and bias,\u201d reads a slide from the training.<\/p>\n<p>Nurses were taught that examples of \u201ccovert racism,\u201d including \u201cwhite silence,\u201d \u201cdenying institutional racism,\u201d the phrase \u201cthere\u2019s only one human race,\u201d \u201cbootstrap theory,\u201d \u201cEurocentric school curricula,\u201d \u201cweaponizing whiteness,\u201d \u201cfetishizing POC,\u201d \u201cclaiming \u2018reverse racism,\u2019\u201d \u201cexcusing\/ \u2018white-splaining\u2019 racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/americanfaith.com\/hhs-to-spend-almost-800k-assessing-structural-racism-of-chronic-kidney-disease\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will provide Emory University nearly $800,000 to mitigate the \u201ceffects of structural racism on chronic kidney disease.\u201d The grant runs from September 1, 2023, to June 30, 2028.
