The former head of the largest Protestant denomination in the United States has shared a positive update on his cancer diagnosis while acknowledging that health problems still linger.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Steve Gaines, the senior pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tennessee, provided an update on the status of his health in a video<\/a> posted on the church\u2019s YouTube account Friday. Gaines, the former President of the Southern Baptist Convention who served from 2016-2018, announced he had cancer back in November<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the video, Gaines informed his congregation that \u201cthe Lord has done a great thing in our lives\u201d after telling them, \u201cI\u2019m so grateful for your prayers.\u201d He noted that \u201cthe last PET scan that I had showed that there were no more polyps of cancer in my lungs.\u201d By contrast, he said, the previous PET scan revealed \u201cmultiple polyps\u201d in his lungs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve all gone, and we\u2019re grateful for that,\u201d Gaines proclaimed. \u201cAlso, I had cancer in my rib on the left side. It also has diminished. It\u2019s gone as well.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gaines said the cancer in his kidney has also \u201cgone down significantly.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI still have cancer, but it\u2019s really, really going away, and I\u2019m grateful to God for miracles and medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing that\u2019s happened though is my myasthenia gravis, which literally means grave or severe muscular weakness, has been re-enacted,\u201d he added. \u201cI\u2019ve had this for 24 years and it\u2019s not lethal, but because my immune system has gone up so much, which is a great thing, because of the immunotherapy and the targeted drugs, that\u2019s good for my cancer but it\u2019s rough on my myasthenia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gaines explained that as a result of the re-emergence of his myasthenia gravis, \u201csome of my muscles are weak.\u201d He identified his neck as \u201cthe place where it has primarily hit this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mayo Clinic<\/a> defines myasthenia gravis as a condition that \u201ccauses muscles under your voluntary control to feel weak and get tired quickly.\u201d It has no cure, but treatments can help with symptoms such as \u201cweakness of arm or leg muscles, double vision, drooping eyelids, and problems with speaking, chewing, swallowing and breathing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gaines’ symptoms specifically affect the neck, and therefore, his \u201cweak neck muscles make it hard to hold up the head.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gaines concluded the video by urging his congregation to \u201ckeep praying for that,\u201d describing his myasthenia gravis as \u201cmore of a nuisance than anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that he planned to preach on Sunday, \u201cI\u2019m so grateful to God for the young men who have been preaching for us the past few weeks.\u201d Praising the men for doing \u201csuch a fantastic job,\u201d he remarked, \u201cI\u2019m just so thankful for all six of these men and how they just poured their hearts out.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Bellevue Baptist Church\u2019s website<\/a> details Gaines\u2019 history in ministry as well as his personal life. Gaines has served as pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church for nearly two decades. His career as a pastor goes back to 1983, and he has led churches in Texas, Alabama and Tennessee. He is married with four daughters and 18 grandchildren.\u00a0<\/p>\n
