{"id":14705,"date":"2024-03-19T07:16:56","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T01:46:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/19\/passing-bar-exam-no-longer-needed-for-law-licensure-in-washington-blocks-marginalized-groups\/"},"modified":"2024-03-19T07:16:56","modified_gmt":"2024-03-19T01:46:56","slug":"passing-bar-exam-no-longer-needed-for-law-licensure-in-washington-blocks-marginalized-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/19\/passing-bar-exam-no-longer-needed-for-law-licensure-in-washington-blocks-marginalized-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"Passing Bar Exam No Longer Needed for Law Licensure in Washington: &#8216;Blocks Marginalized Groups&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_82\">\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<p>Washington\u2019s Supreme Court ruled that an individual no longer needs to pass the bar exam for law licensure.<\/p>\n<p>The bar exam is a hindrance to \u201cmarginalized groups,\u201d according to the court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter more than three years of extensive study\u2014bringing together data and research with testimony from scholars and experts\u2014the Task Force came to two important findings: The traditional bar exam disproportionately and unnecessarily blocks marginalized groups from entering the practice of law, and the traditional bar exam is at best minimally effective for ensuring competent lawyers,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courts.wa.gov\/newsinfo\/?fa=newsinfo.internetdetail&amp;newsid=50389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington Courts<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courts.wa.gov\/content\/publicUpload\/Supreme%20Court%20Orders\/Order%2025700B711.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruling<\/a>, the court wrote that the bar exam is filled with \u201cracism and classism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to the racism and classism written into the test itself the time and financial costs of the test reinforce historical inequities in our profession,\u201d the ruling states.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling also proposed creating \u201cadditional, experiential pathways to bar licensure that protect the public by improving lawyer skills while reducing the unproductive barriers for historically marginalized groups to enter the profession.\u201d These pathways include apprenticeship programs, completing skill credits, and participating in 500 hours of work as a licensed legal intern.<\/p>\n<p>By removing the necessity of passing the bar exam and opening numerous pathways to law licensure, the court has \u201cmore responsibility for and control over entry into the legal profession in order to: protect the public and improve trust in the legal profession, advance the cause of diversity equity and inclusion, facilitate lawyer competency, and reduce barriers to entry into the legal profession,\u201d according to the ruling.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Supreme Court of Washington has ruled that prospective lawyers will no longer be required to pass a bar exam to practice in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was reportedly made because the bar exam was too difficult for &#8220;examinees of color.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qqN3cAIOXC\">https:\/\/t.co\/qqN3cAIOXC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ThePublica (@ThePublicaNow) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThePublicaNow\/status\/1769790584422560248?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 18, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>                    <!--begin code --><\/p>\n<p>                    <!--end code --><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/americanfaith.com\/passing-bar-exam-no-longer-needed-for-law-licensure-in-washington-blocks-marginalized-groups\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington\u2019s Supreme Court ruled that an individual no longer needs to pass the bar exam for law licensure.
