{"id":14101,"date":"2024-03-15T06:34:51","date_gmt":"2024-03-15T01:04:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/15\/librarians-hide-lgbtq-blm-content-from-parents\/"},"modified":"2024-03-15T06:34:51","modified_gmt":"2024-03-15T01:04:51","slug":"librarians-hide-lgbtq-blm-content-from-parents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/15\/librarians-hide-lgbtq-blm-content-from-parents\/","title":{"rendered":"Librarians Hide LGBTQ, BLM Content from Parents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A South Carolina school hid LGBTQ and BLM materials from parents by restricting access to a catalog, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2024\/03\/13\/south-carolina-school-district-hides-book-catalog-parents-moms-liberty-scrutiny-docs-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Signal<\/a> report.<\/p>\n<p>Moms for Liberty, a parental rights group, shared internal documents with the outlet, saying, \u201cInstead of listing these books as available in the library, they are making a conscious decision to include them in curriculum read aloud in class so parents don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In one email, Powdersville High School librarian Jen Chesney wrote, \u201cWe had to remove our card catalogs form online, so parents can\u2019t scour it for critical race theory books (sigh).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another email, Chesney wrote, \u201cThe Moms of Liberty are coming hard at us with book challenges (mind you, the leader of the group doesn\u2019t even have a child in our district \u2013<em> <\/em>*grrrr*), so we\u2019re going to need to tread lightly with our topical choices. They have their censoring guns loaded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A librarian at Wagener-Salley High School, Heather Loy, wrote in a 2022 email, \u201cAs much as they don\u2019t want to [hear] it, parents should only be allowed to have a say in THEIR children\u2019s access not what is provided to all students access. Parents should not be included in collection development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parents have overwhelmingly complained about their children being exposed to explicit materials in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>In December, a police officer was <a href=\"https:\/\/americanfaith.com\/police-called-to-investigate-explicit-illustrations-in-book-after-parents-complain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a> to a middle school in Massachusetts after an anonymous parent said that a frequently-banned book on gender ideology was being read.<\/p>\n<p>The book, \u201cGender Queer,\u201d features sexually explicit material and was banned for two years across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Police Chief Paul Storti\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/schools\/2023\/12\/20\/police-called-great-barrington-middle-school-gender-queer-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0Boston.com that because the \u201ccomplaint was made directly to the police department, we are obligated and have a duty to examine the complaint further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>District Superintendent Peter Dillion said in a statement that he would have \u201cpreferred that the complaint came to the school or district and not the police.
