Many Christians (namely Evangelicals) sense a lot of cognitive dissonance between how they were raised to think about the Bible and some important (and undeniable) developments in modern biblical scholarship\u2014particularly the Old Testament\u2014over the past 150 years.<\/p>\n<p>My primary audience is those readers who find it difficult to maintain their faith in<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/peteenns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Monkey-Town-1.jpeg?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1797\" title=\"Monkey Town\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/peteenns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Monkey-Town-1.jpeg?resize=181%2C279&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"279\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/a> God because conventional evangelical approaches often mishandle the challenges raised by modern biblical scholarship\u2013particularly because they\u00a0commonly take a defensive posture to ideas that challenge the system.<\/p>\n<p>Defensive approaches are exercises in special pleading, attempts to hold on to comfortable idea despite evidence that makes such ideas problematic. It is precisely the ineffectiveness of certain ways of thinking about the Bible that can sometimes be spiritually discouraging for Christians who love and want to hold on to their Bible, but who also feel the weight of certain kinds of evidence.<\/p>\n<p>I will try to chime in now and then on Rachel\u2019s blog and add to the discussion.
