It\u2019s very easy to\u00a0<strong>disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2026 James Madison in 1788 \u2026 said \u2026 \u2018There are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by\u00a0<strong>gradual and silent encroachment<\/strong>\u00a0of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations\u2019 \u2026<\/p>\n<p>What can we do about this? \u2026 We can write to our congressmen and our senators \u2026 Say right now that\u00a0<strong>we want no further encroachment<\/strong>\u00a0on these individual liberties and freedoms \u2026\u00a0<strong>We do not want socialized medicine \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t, this program I promise you will pass \u2026 and behind it will come\u00a0<strong>other federal programs that will invade every area of freedom<\/strong>\u00a0as we have known \u2026 until, one day \u2026\u00a0<strong>we will awake to find that we have socialism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And \u2026 you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children\u2019s children,\u00a0<strong>what it once was like in America when men were free.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At St. John\u2019s University in New York, March 28, 1985,\u00a0<strong>Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0repeated one of President Gerald Ford\u2019s famous phrases:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cGovernment<\/strong>\u00a0that is big enough to give you everything you want is more likely to simply\u00a0<strong>take everything you\u2019ve got.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0remarked to the Heritage Council, Warren, Michigan, October 10, 1984:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry David Thoreau was right: that government is best which\u00a0<strong>governs least.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/americanminute.com\/pages\/posts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ci5.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/fvuOxPLf6yxWpFfB1PHO7Bi9LmURIvK4CmGeIbkt1t27fFMECGVukGChK3DNHgrgP9YxVN0AWmGYOYbmuqsskmDh_CmY2Aii5OL_nT8jElOKwzllijMH_j8F4IOCZMCeeiiMIkhkwoR1=s0-d-e1-ft#https:\/\/files.constantcontact.com\/766c6672201\/fccecbbd-3902-4029-aa87-840a552a4130.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:398px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>In his 1964 speech, \u201cA Time for Choosing,\u201d\u00a0<strong>Ronald Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0stated:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suggest to you there is no left or right, only an up or down.<\/p>\n<p>Up to the maximum of individual freedom consistent with law and order,\u00a0<strong>or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>and regardless of their humanitarian purpose,\u00a0<strong>those who would sacrifice freedom for security have,<\/strong>\u00a0whether they know it or not,\u00a0<strong>chosen this downward path.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On March 20, 1981, at the Conservative Political Action Conference Dinner, Mayflower Hotel, Washington, DC,\u00a0<strong>Ronald Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0stated:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvil is powerless if the good are unafraid.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why the\u00a0<strong>Marxist vision<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>of man without God<\/strong>\u00a0must eventually be seen as an empty and a false faith \u2014 the second oldest in the world \u2014 first proclaimed in the Garden of Eden with whispered words \u2026\u2019Ye shall be as gods.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The crisis of the Western world \u2026 exists to the degree in which it is indifferent to\u00a0<strong>God.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0stated in Beijing, China, April 27, 1984:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have seen the rise of fascism and\u00a0<strong>communism.<\/strong>\u00a0Both philosophies glorify\u00a0<strong>the arbitrary power of the state<\/strong>\u00a0\u2026 But both theories fail.Both deny those\u00a0<strong>God-given liberties<\/strong>\u00a0that are the inalienable right of each person on this planet, indeed, they deny the existence of\u00a0<strong>God.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his autobiography,\u00a0<em>An American Life<\/em>\u00a0(Simon &amp; Schuster, 1990, p. 409),\u00a0<strong>Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0warned of the\u00a0<strong>danger of Islamic fundamentalists\u00a0<\/strong>acquiring<strong>\u00a0nuclear weapons:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cRadical fundamentalist sects<\/strong>\u00a0\u2026 have institutionalized\u00a0<strong>murder and terrorism<\/strong>\u00a0in the name of God, promising followers instant entry into paradise if they die for their faith or kill an enemy who challenges it.<\/p>\n<p>Twice in recent years,\u00a0<strong>America has lost loyal allies<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>Middle East,<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>shah of Iran<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Anwar Sadat,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>at the hands of these fanatics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think you can overstate the importance that\u00a0<strong>the rise of<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Islamic fundamentalism<\/strong>\u00a0will have to the rest of the world in the century ahead \u2014 especially if, as seems possible, its\u00a0<strong>most fanatical elements<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>get their hands on nuclear and chemical weapons<\/strong>\u00a0and the means to deliver them against their enemies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On May 17, 1982, in a proposed Constitutional Amendment on Prayer in Schools,\u00a0<strong>President Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0stated:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur liberty springs from and depends upon an abiding faith in\u00a0<strong>God.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On February 3, 1983,\u00a0<strong>President Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0signed Proclamation 5018 (97 STAT. 1545) designating 1983 the\u00a0<strong>Year of the Bible:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the President of the United States of America<\/p>\n<p>A Proclamation<\/p>\n<p>Of the many influences that have shaped the United States of America into a distinctive Nation and people, none may be said to be more fundamental and enduring than the\u00a0<strong>Bible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Deep religious beliefs stemming from the\u00a0<strong>Old and New Testaments of the Bible<\/strong>\u00a0inspired many of the early settlers of our country, providing them with the strength, character, convictions, and faith necessary to withstand great hardship and danger in this new and rugged land.<\/p>\n<p>These shared beliefs helped forge a sense of common purpose among the widely dispersed colonies \u2014 a sense of community which laid the foundation for the spirit of nationhood that was to develop in later decades.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Bible\u00a0<\/strong>and its teachings helped form the basis for the Founding Fathers\u2019 abiding belief in the inalienable rights of the individual, rights which they found implicit in the\u00a0<strong>Bible\u2019s teachings<\/strong>\u00a0of the inherent worth and dignity of each individual.<\/p>\n<p>This same sense of man patterned the convictions of those who framed the English system of law inherited by our own Nation, as well as the ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>For centuries the\u00a0<strong>Bible\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0emphasis on compassion and love for our neighbor has inspired institutional and governmental expressions of benevolent outreach such as private charity, the establishment of schools and hospitals, and the abolition of slavery \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reagan\u2019s Proclamation<\/strong>\u00a0continued:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of our greatest national leaders \u2014 among them Presidents Washington, Jackson, Lincoln, and Wilson \u2014 have recognized the influence of the\u00a0<strong>Bible<\/strong>\u00a0on our country\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>The plainspoken Andrew Jackson referred to the\u00a0<strong>Bible<\/strong>\u00a0as no less than \u2018the rock on which our Republic rests.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Today our beloved America and, indeed, the world, is facing a decade of enormous challenge. As a people we may well be tested as we have seldom, if ever, been tested before.<\/p>\n<p>We will need resources of spirit even more than resources of technology, education, and armaments.<\/p>\n<p>There could be no more fitting moment than now to reflect with gratitude, humility, and urgency upon the wisdom revealed to us in the writing that Abraham Lincoln called \u2018the best gift\u00a0<strong>God<\/strong>\u00a0has ever given to man \u2026 But for it we could not know right from wrong.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The Congress of the United States, in recognition of the unique contribution of the\u00a0<strong>Bible<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>shaping the history and character of this Nation,<\/strong>\u00a0and so many of its citizens, has requested the President to designate the year 1983 as the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Year of the Bible.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NOW, THEREFORE, I, RONALD REAGAN, President of the United States of America,\u00a0<strong>in recognition of the contributions and influence of the Bible on our Republic\u00a0<\/strong>and our people, do hereby proclaim 1983 the\u00a0<strong>Year of the Bible<\/strong>\u00a0in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>I encourage all citizens, each in his or her own way, to reexamine and rediscover its priceless and timeless message.<\/p>\n<p>IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this third day of February,\u00a0<strong>in the year of our Lord<\/strong>\u00a0nineteen hundred and eighty-three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and seventh. RONALD REAGAN\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>President Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0told the National Religious Broadcasters, January 30, 1984:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was pleased last year to proclaim 1983 the\u00a0<strong>Year of the Bible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But, you know, a group called the ACLU severely criticized me for doing that. Well, I wear their indictment like a badge of honor.<\/p>\n<p>I believe I stand in pretty good company. Abraham Lincoln called the\u00a0<strong>Bible<\/strong>\u00a0\u2018the best gift God has given to man. But for it,\u2019 he said, \u2018we could not know right from wrong.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On October 13, 1983, in a Q &amp; A session with women leaders of Christian religious organizations,\u00a0<strong>President Ronald Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0stated:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I\u2019m president, your group and others who stand up for our\u00a0<strong>Judeo-Christian values<\/strong>\u00a0will be welcomed here, because you belong here \u2026<\/p>\n<p>No greater truth shines through than the one you live by every day: that preserving America must begin with faith in the\u00a0<strong>God<\/strong>\u00a0who has blessed our land.<\/p>\n<p>And we don\u2019t have the answers; He does. Isaiah reminded us that\u00a0<strong>\u2018the Lord opens His gates and keeps in peace the nation that trusts in Him \u2026\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNelle Reagan, my mother, God rest her soul, had an\u00a0<strong>unshakable faith in God\u2019s goodness.<\/strong>\u00a0And while I may not have realized it in my youth, I know now that she planted that faith very deeply in me.<\/p>\n<p>She made the most difficult\u00a0<strong>Christian message<\/strong>\u00a0seem very easy. And, like you, she knew you could never repay one bad deed with another. Her way was forgiveness and goodness, and both began with love \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Well, thanks to Nelle Reagan, I believe in\u00a0<strong>intercessory prayer.<\/strong>\u00a0And I know that those prayers are giving me strength that I otherwise would not possess \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Founding Fathers believed that faith in\u00a0<strong>God<\/strong>\u00a0was the key to our being a good people and America\u2019s becoming a great nation. George Washington kissed the\u00a0<strong>Bible<\/strong>\u00a0at his inauguration.<\/p>\n<p>And to those who would have government separate from religion, he had these words: \u2018Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principles\u2026&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0continued:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Benjamin Franklin, at the time when they were struggling with what was to be the American Constitution, finally one day said to those who were working with him that,\u00a0<strong>\u2018Without God\u2019s help,<\/strong>\u00a0we shall succeed in this political building\u00a0<strong>no better than the builders of Babel.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And if we ever forget that, we\u2019re lost \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reagan\u00a0<\/strong>stated further:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI pray that we won\u2019t lose that idea, and that\u2019s why I was motivated to proclaim or designate 1983 the\u00a0<strong>Year of the Bible \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And I hope we will also recognize the true meaning of the\u00a0<strong>First Amendment.<\/strong>\u00a0Its words were meant to guarantee freedom of religion to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>But I believe the\u00a0<strong>First Amendment<\/strong>\u00a0has been twisted to the point that freedom of religion is in danger of becoming freedom from religion \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0concluded:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinally, let me just say a few words about another part of freedom that is under siege:\u00a0<strong>the sanctity of human life.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Either the law protects human beings, or it doesn\u2019t \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Will she be denied her chance for love and life because someone decides she\u2019s too weak to warrant our help, or because someone has taken it upon himself or herself to decide the quality of her life doesn\u2019t justify keeping her alive?<\/p>\n<p>Is that not\u00a0<strong>God\u2019s decision<\/strong>\u00a0to make? And isn\u2019t it our duty to serve even the least of these, for in so doing we serve Him?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/americanminute.com\/pages\/posts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ci5.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/QrfDcQMyq3hq_UDt-lO54Mqoa9n7DKFUoPjlVE0_aDveCb8XQzSiBI4v9V3RLyHCJNDYXRI5SH3HtFkVlE-pPLjKsm3Bhf7JX6xZ6FJO9JcELnR5x45Q8Jh0o2g3cxBXvVS_cVfXP2bF=s0-d-e1-ft#https:\/\/files.constantcontact.com\/766c6672201\/5fa832c6-a6aa-4a96-8a98-c8b0056c03c0.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0wrote in his article, \u201cAbortion and the Conscience of the Nation,\u201d\u00a0<em>The Human Life Review,<\/em>\u00a01983:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLincoln recognized that we could not survive as a free land when some men could decide that others were not fit to be free and should be slaves \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Likewise,\u00a0<strong>we cannot survive<\/strong>\u00a0as a free nation when some men decide that others are\u00a0<strong>not fit to live<\/strong>\u00a0and should be\u00a0<strong>abandoned to abortion.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On January 31, 1983, at the annual convention of the National Religious Broadcasters,\u00a0<strong>President Ronald Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0stated:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us come together,\u00a0<strong>Christians\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Jews,<\/strong>\u00a0let us pray together, march, lobby, and mobilize every force we have, so that we can end the\u00a0<strong>tragic taking of unborn children\u2019s lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who among us can imagine the\u00a0<strong>excruciating pain<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>unborn<\/strong>\u00a0must feel\u00a0<strong>as their lives are snuffed away? \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I read in the\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0about a young woman named Victoria. She\u2019s with child, and she said, \u2018In this society we save whales, we save timber wolves and bald eagles and Coke bottles. Yet everyone wanted me to throw away my baby.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Well, Victoria\u2019s story has a happy ending. Her baby will be born. Victoria has received assistance from a Christian couple, and from Sav-ALife, a new Dallas group run by Jim McKee \u2026<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re living the meaning of the two great commandments:\u00a0<strong>\u2018Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might\u2019 and \u2018Thou shalt love they neighbor as thyself \u2026&#8217;\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0continued:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen American reach out for values of faith, family, and caring for the needy, they\u2019re saying, \u2018We want the\u00a0<strong>Word of God.<\/strong>\u00a0We want to face the future with the\u00a0<strong>Bible.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re blessed to have its words of strength, comfort, and truth. I\u2019m accused of being simplistic at times with some of the problems that confront us.<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019ve often wondered: Within the covers of that single\u00a0<strong>Book<\/strong>\u00a0are all the answers to all the problems that face us today, if we\u2019d only look there.\u00a0<strong>\u2018The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, but the word of our God shall stand forever.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s my firm belief that the enduring values, as I say, presented in its pages have a great meaning for each of us and for our nation. The\u00a0<strong>Bible<\/strong>\u00a0can touch our hearts, order our minds, refresh our souls.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I realize it\u2019s fashionable in some circles to believe that no one in government should \u2026 encourage others to read the\u00a0<strong>Bible<\/strong>\u00a0\u2026 We\u2019re told that will violate the constitutional separation of church and state established by the founding fathers in the\u00a0<strong>First Amendment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, it might interest those critics to know that none other than the father of our country, George Washington, kissed the\u00a0<strong>Bible<\/strong>\u00a0at his inauguration.<\/p>\n<p>And he also said words to the effect that there could be no real morality in a society without\u00a0<strong>religion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John Adams called it \u2018the best book in the world,\u2019 and Ben Franklin said,<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2026 the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that\u00a0<strong>God governs in the affairs of men \u2026\u00a0<\/strong>without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel; we shall be divided by our little, partial, local interests, our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a reproach, a bye-word down to future ages\u2019 \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0added:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAll of us,\u00a0<\/strong>as<strong>\u00a0Protestants, Catholics,\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Jews,<\/strong>\u00a0have a special responsibility to remember our fellow believers who are being persecuted in other lands. We\u2019re all children of Abraham. We\u2019re children of the same\u00a0<strong>God \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year, for the first time in history, the Voice of America broadcast a religious service worldwide \u2013 Christmas Eve at the National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Now, these broadcasts are not popular with government of totalitarian power. But make no mistake, we have a duty to broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>Aleksandr Herzen, the Russian writer, warned,\u00a0<strong>\u2018To shrink from saying a word in defense of the oppressed is as bad as any crime.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, I pledge to you that America will stand us, speak out, and defend the values we share. To those who would crush religious freedom, our message is plain: You may jail your believers.<\/p>\n<p>You may close their churches, confiscate their\u00a0<strong>Bibles,<\/strong>\u00a0and harass their rabbis and priests,\u00a0<strong>but<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>you will never destroy the love of God and freedom that burns in their hearts. They will triumph over you \u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Continuing his address to the National Religious Broadcasters,\u00a0<strong>Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0stated:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Malcolm Muggeridge, the brilliant English commentator, has written, \u2018The most important happening in the world today is\u00a0<strong>the resurgence of Christianity<\/strong>\u00a0in the Soviet Union, demonstrating that the whole effort sustained over sixty years to brainwash the Russian people into accepting materialism has been a fiasco.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Think of it: the most awesome military machine in history, but it is not match for that one single man, hero, strong yet tender,\u00a0<strong>Prince of Peace.<\/strong>\u00a0His name alone,\u00a0<strong>Jesus,<\/strong>\u00a0can lift our hearts, soothe our sorrows, heal our wounds, and drive away our fears \u2026<\/p>\n<p>With His message and with your conviction and commitment, we can still move mountains \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0concluded:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore I say goodbye, I wanted to leave with you these words from an old Netherlands folk song, because they made me think of our meeting here today:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We gather together to ask\u00a0<strong>the Lord\u2019s blessing;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We all do extol Thee, Thou Leader triumphant,<\/p>\n<p>And pray that Thou still\u00a0<strong>our Defender<\/strong>\u00a0wilt be.<\/p>\n<p>Let Thy congregation escape tribulation:<\/p>\n<p>Thy name be ever praised!\u00a0<strong>O Lord,<\/strong>\u00a0make us free!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>To which I would only add a line from another song:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018America, America,\u00a0<strong>God shed His grace on thee.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ronald Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0addressed Temple Hillel and Community Leaders in Valley Stream, October 26, 1984:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we\u2019re also remembering the guiding light of our\u00a0<strong>Judeo-Christian tradition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All of us here today are\u00a0<strong>descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,<\/strong>\u00a0sons and daughters of the same\u00a0<strong>God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I believe we are bound by faith in our\u00a0<strong>God,<\/strong>\u00a0by our love for family and neighborhood, by our deep desire for a more peaceful world, and by our commitment to protect the freedom which is our legacy as Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On August 7, 1982,\u00a0<strong>President Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0wrote a letter to his dying, atheist Father-in-Law, Dr. Loyal Davis:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDear Loyal,<\/p>\n<p>I hope you\u2019ll forgive me for this, but I\u2019ve been wanting to write you ever since we talked on the phone. I am aware of the strain you are under and believe with all my heart there is help for that.<\/p>\n<p>First I want to tell you of a personal experience I\u2019ve kept to myself for a long time. During my first year as Governor you\u2019ll recall the situation I found in Calif. was almost as bad as the one in Wash. today. It seemed as if the problems were endless and insolvable.<\/p>\n<p>Then I found myself with an ulcer. In all those years at Warner Bros., no one had been able to give me an ulcer and I felt ashamed as if it were a sign of weakness on my part. John Sharpe had me on Malox and I lived with a constant pain that ranged from discomfort to extremely sharp attacks.<\/p>\n<p>This went on for months. I had a bottle of Maalox in my desk, my briefcase and of course at home. Then one morning I got up, went into the bathroom, reached for the bottle as always and some thing happened. I knew I didn\u2019t need it. I had gone to bed with the usual pain the night before but I knew that morning I was healed. She had written to tell me she was one of a group who met every day to pray for me.<\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, the second letter was from a man, again a stranger, in the other end of the state telling me he was part of a group that met weekly to pray for me.<\/p>\n<p>Within the hour a young fellow from the legal staff came into my office on some routine matter. On the way out he paused in the door and said: \u2018Gov. I think maybe you\u2019d like to know \u2014 some of us on the staff come in early every morning and get together to pray for you.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Coincidence? I don\u2019t think so. A couple of weeks later Nancy and I went down to L.A. and had our annual checkup. John Sharpe, a little puzzled, told me I no longer had an ulcer but added there was no indication I\u2019d ever had one. Word of honor \u2014 I never told him about that particular day in Sacramento \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a line in the\u00a0<strong>Bible<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 \u2018Where ever two or more are gathered in my name there will I be also.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Loyal I know of your feeling \u2014 your doubt but could I just impose on you a little longer?<\/p>\n<p>Some seven hundred years before the birth of\u00a0<strong>Christ<\/strong>\u00a0the ancient Jewish prophets predicted the coming of a Messiah. They said he would be born in a lowly place, would proclaim himself the\u00a0<strong>Son of God<\/strong>\u00a0and would be put to death for saying that.<\/p>\n<p>All in all there were a total of one hundred and twenty three specific prophesies about his life all of which came true. Crucifixion was unknown in those times, yet it was foretold that he would be nailed to a cross of wood. And one of the predictions was that he would be born of a Virgin \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reagan<\/strong>\u00a0ended his letter to his father-in-law:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I know that is probably the hardest for you as a Dr. to accept. The only answer that can be given is \u2014 a miracle.<\/p>\n<p>But Loyal I don\u2019t find that as great a miracle as the actual history of his life. Either he was who he said he was or he was the greatest faker &amp; charlatan who ever lived. But would a liar &amp; faker suffer the death he did when all he had to do to save himself was admit he\u2019d been lying?<\/p>\n<p>The miracle is that a young man of 30 yrs. without credentials as a scholar or priest began preaching on street corners. He owned nothing but the clothes on his back &amp; he didn\u2019t travel beyond a circle less than one hundred miles across. He did this for only 3 years and then was executed as a common criminal.<\/p>\n<p>But for two thousand years he has \u2026 had more impact on the world than all the teachers, scientists, emperors, generals and admirals who ever lived, all put together.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 The apostle John said,\u00a0<strong>\u2018For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that who so ever believed in him would not perish but have everlasting life.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have been promised that all we have to do is ask\u00a0<strong>God<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>Jesus name<\/strong>\u00a0to help when we have done all we can \u2014 when we\u2019ve come to the end of our strength and abilities and we\u2019ll have that help.\u00a0<strong>We only have to trust and have faith in his infinite goodness and mercy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Loyal, you and Edith have known a great love \u2014 more than many have been permitted to know. That love will not end with the end of this life. We\u2019ve been promised this is only a part of life and that a greater life, a greater glory awaits us.
