{"id":13326,"date":"2024-03-10T01:31:22","date_gmt":"2024-03-09T20:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/10\/house-committee-demands-mit-respond-to-antisemitism\/"},"modified":"2024-03-10T01:31:22","modified_gmt":"2024-03-09T20:01:22","slug":"house-committee-demands-mit-respond-to-antisemitism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/10\/house-committee-demands-mit-respond-to-antisemitism\/","title":{"rendered":"House Committee Demands MIT Respond to Antisemitism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The House Committee on Education and the Workforce is <a href=\"https:\/\/edworkforce.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=410253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demanding<\/a> that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) provide documentation regarding its response to antisemitism on campus.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/edworkforce.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/3.8.24_mit_letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> comes as the committee is conducting an ongoing investigation into antisemitism concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have grave concerns regarding the inadequacy of MIT\u2019s response to antisemitism on its campus,\u201d committee chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) wrote. \u201cIn testimony before the Committee on December 5, 2023, Dr. Kornbluth made numerous statements that further called into question the Institute\u2019s willingness to address antisemitism seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MIT Corporation\u2019s assessment stands at odds with the experiences of many Jewish MIT students. A survey of 75 Jewish students found that 59 percent had experienced antisemitism since October 7, and 73 percent did not feel comfortable publicly being Jewish, Israeli, or supportive of Israel on MIT\u2019s campus,\u201d the letter continued, adding, \u201cMIT has cited its supposed commitment to free speech as limiting its ability to take action against antisemitism on its campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several other U.S. universities face antisemitism inquiries.<\/p>\n<p>American Faith <a href=\"https:\/\/americanfaith.com\/department-of-education-opens-investigation-on-northwestern-university-after-antisemitism-complaint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights opened an investigation into Northwestern University after a\u00a0complaint was filed by Campus Reform editor-in-chief Dr. Zachary Marschall over the university\u2019s handling of antisemitic\u00a0incidents.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint, filed on January 10, claims that Northwestern\u00a0University has failed to appropriately respond to incidents of harassment of Jewish students following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Johns Hopkins University <a href=\"https:\/\/americanfaith.com\/johns-hopkins-university-facing-federal-antisemitism-inquiry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">faced<\/a> a federal antisemitism inquiry after a complaint claimed that Jewish students were being made to feel \u201cunwelcome and unsafe\u201d on campus.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint against Johns Hopkins, filed by Campus Reform Editor-in-Chief Dr. Zachary Marschall, said that the university has not done enough to respond to harassment incidents of Jewish students, violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.<\/p>\n<p>Following Congress\u2019 December antisemitism hearing, University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill \u201cvoluntarily tendered her resignation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/americanfaith.com\/university-of-pennsylvania-president-liz-magill-steps-down-over-antisemitism-testimony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to Board of Trustees Chairman Scott L. Bok.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a moment during yesterday\u2019s congressional hearing on antisemitism when I was asked if a call for the genocide of Jewish people on our campus would violate our policies. In that moment, I was focused on our university\u2019s long-standing policies aligned with the U.S. Constitution, which says that speech alone is not punishable,\u201d Magill said following the hearing. \u201cI was not focused on, but I should have been, on the irrefutable fact that a call for genocide of Jewish people is a call for some of the most terrible violence human beings can perpetrate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harvard President Claudine Gay also <a href=\"https:\/\/americanfaith.com\/harvard-university-president-claudine-gay-resigns-two-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resigned<\/a> following allegations of plagiarism and failing to condemn antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with a heavy heart but a deep love for Harvard that I write to share that I will be stepping down as president.
