<\/a>In the fifty-second year, in the third month on the third day, as I was checking my Google Analytics, I looked, and behold, I saw a light brighter than the noonday sun, and the voice of one like the Son of Man spoke to me from within.<\/p>\n\u201cI see you have a blog.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cYes, Lord, you know that I do.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cHow\u2019s the traffic?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cGood, Lord\u2013though, without you, which of us would get but a handful of pageviews.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cStop that. I have a job for you. I want you to blog more.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cOh Lord\u2013you who rule the internet with wisdom and justice\u2013who am I that you should be mindful of the humble state of your servant? Yet, if it is your will, Oh Lord, that many more will hear, let it be done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cI told you to stop that. Now listen. I want you to blog more\u2013for you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201c\u2026not sure I follow\u2026.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cFrankly, I hate the internet, but you seem to like it. So, I want you to blog as much as possible because blogging gives you all sorts of opportunities to practice.\u201d \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cPractice what? Formulating my thoughts in under 800 words? Coming up with catchy titles? Learning the craft of writing?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cNo, not remotely. Blogging gives you chances to practice what I mean when I say \u2018follow me.’\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cOh, is this about me needing to be more orthodox. Because if it is\u2026I mean, listen\u2026all this is hard to figure out, and I\u2019m doing my best, but those Southern Baptists and Neo-Calvinists just drive me\u2026.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cNo, it\u2019s not about what you say (although sometimes you do weird me out a bit). It\u2019s about what happens after.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cYou mean checking the statistics all evening while I\u2019m\u00a0watching\u00a03 hours of Big Bang Theory, because I can try to tone that down. I thought of giving it up for lent.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cYou know me better than that. I\u2019m all into inner transformation, not a check list of does and don\u2019ts.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cThat\u2019s a relief.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cNo it\u2019s not. This is much harder. I want you to blog a lot to so you can begin to work on all that garbage inside of you that surfaces every time you post something.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cWhat garbage?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cWell, for one, you can work on not hating people who disagree with you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cI don\u2019t \u2018hate\u2019 people who disagree with me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cCome off it. You \u00a0practically have to tie yourself to the neighbor\u2019s mailbox to keep from firing off a \u2018response\u2019 to negative comments, and even if you stop yourself, you brood about it. And, on the other side, you feel warm and glowy inside when someone thinks your posts should be collected, trimmed with gold, and inserted between Jude and Revelation. Here\u2019s the question you need to learn how to answer: what is going on inside of you that generates those kinds of reactions?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know. Sin?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cBravo, but this isn\u2019t a theology exam. What you need to do is the hard work of seeing yourself more clearly, and there\u2019s no better way to get at that than to find those things that make you either very angry or very happy and take them apart bit by bit until you get to the bottom of why. When you get there, then<\/span> you\u2019ll know what sin really means. If blogging happens to be the doorway into your deep down self, I\u2019m good with that. I\u2019ve worked with less.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cYou sound like a therapist.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cYou sound like you need one.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cI\u2019m not sure I\u2019m going to like this.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cThat right there<\/span> already tells you something you need to know. Welcome to the journey.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cUh?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nAnd then, as if waking from a dream, I got ready for the day, poured some coffee, and pondered these things.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
