Ron DeSantis.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the university allocated $5 million to facilitate DEI initiatives but announced on Friday a redirection of these funds to a faculty recruitment pool.<\/p>\n<p>Governor DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1763655357581205839?s=20\">expressed <\/a>his approval of the university\u2019s decision through his official social media platform. \u201cDEI is toxic and has no place in our public universities. I\u2019m glad that Florida was the first state to eliminate DEI and I hope more states follow suit,\u201d he tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, state Democrats reacted with outrage and dismay. State Rep. Yvonne Hinson remarked, \u201cI am stunned but not surprised at the elimination of DEI staff at University of Florida, my Alma Mater.\u201d She added, \u201cThe culture wars engaged in the Republican-dominated Florida House of Representatives will continue until Floridians have had enough and develop the will and determination to flip the majority in the Florida House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Dianne Hart criticized the move, stating, \u201cWhen will we stop with these made-up culture wars that are literally costing people their livelihoods?\u201d She added, \u201cWe can\u2019t call ourselves the \u2018free State of Florida\u2019 when children aren\u2019t free to learn the truth of their history, and see the diversity of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In July, a report accused the University of Florida of underreporting its DEI efforts to mask the extent of its support for radicalism on campus. During the same period, DEI experts and activists voiced concern over declining interest and investment in their political agenda by companies and corporations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2020 was the year that we were definitely making strides \u2014 but there wasn\u2019t any strategy, there wasn\u2019t any plan,\u201d stated business strategist Kim Crayton. One estimate indicated that DEI investment surged to as much as $3.5 billion in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a PR moment \u2014 corporate blackface,\u201d Crayton remarked. \u201cI told people at the time: \u2018White guilt isn\u2019t going to last.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several companies accused of retracting their support for DEI initiatives included Disney, Netflix, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and Warner Bros.
