A piece of Canadian legislation, Bill C-367, will reportedly criminalize Christianity by considering some biblical prayers and passages \u201chate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under the current code<\/a>, a \u201cgood faith\u201d defense protects an individual if the speech in question is considered \u201chateful.\u201d A person will not be convicted of an offense \u201cif, in good faith, the person expressed or attempted to establish by an argument an opinion on a religious subject or an opinion based on a belief in a religious text.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bill C-367 removes the \u201cgood faith\u201d defense.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to political commentator Eva Vlaardingerbroek, Bill C-367 \u201ccould land Christians in jail for quoting the Bible or expressing a faith based opinion if the Canadian government deems it \u201cpromotion of hatred or antisemitism.\u201d<\/p>\n

A summary of the bill reads<\/a>, \u201cThis enactment amends the Criminal Code to eliminate as a defence against wilful promotion of hatred or antisemitism the fact that a person, in good faith, expressed or attempted to establish by an argument an opinion on a religious subject or an opinion based on a belief in a religious text.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joseph Boot, the president of the evangelical think tank Ezra Institute, shared his concern for the bill on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cWarning! Canada\u2019s Bill C-367 to repeal Section 319(3)(b) of Criminal Code \u2013 a protection against \u201cPublic Incitement of Hatred\u201d if established upon \u201c\u2026 opinion on a religious subject or belief in a religious text;\u201d Enforcement of this & related legislation (Bill C4) is coming,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

One of the bill\u2019s sponsors, Sylvie B\u00e9rub\u00e9, said<\/a> in a news release, \u201cIt is quite sad that some people use their position of influence, religious or civil, even impunity conferred to them, to incite violence and hatred.\u201d She added that the bill \u201cis about preserving peace of mind amongst Quebecois and Canadians and all communities that hateful words that incite violence should never be protected by the Criminal Code.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
