Lewis\u2019 Narnia: \u2018Re-Enchantment of the World\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.swncdn.com\/via\/images\/2024\/02\/23\/34698\/34698-mark-rabe--ik6zxqc6eu-unsplash_source_file.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The filmmaker behind Netflix\u2019s new <em>Chronicle of Narnia<\/em> adaptation for Netflix says in a new interview she wants the project to be \u201cmagical\u201d and that her goal is to give viewers a \u201cre-enchantment of the world\u201d through the series.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Greta Gerwig, who directed <em>Barbie<\/em> (2023), <em>Lady Bird<\/em> (2017), and <em>Little Women<\/em> (2019), is the director behind Netflix\u2019s massive project of adapting C.S. Lewis\u2019 popular novels. A release date has not been set.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>She recently was named one of <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/collection\/women-of-the-year\/6692799\/greta-gerwig-interview\/\">Time Magazine\u2019s Women of the Year<\/a> and opened up about her thoughts on Lewis and <em>Narnia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What are you trying to accomplish with the Narnia movies? \u201cRe-enchantment \u2026 of the world.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WuJPfYqc2j\">pic.twitter.com\/WuJPfYqc2j<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Aaron Earls (@WardrobeDoor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WardrobeDoor\/status\/1760729990776410393?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 22, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI would say the two big books of my childhood were <em>Little Women<\/em> and the <em>Narnia<\/em> books,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I had that, you know, instant excitement, but instant terror that comes from trying to tackle something that has shaped me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerwig is a Lewis fan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m trying to make it magical,\u201d she said of the project. \u201cI want to make it feel like magic.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She then paraphrased Lewis: \u201cC.S. Lewis said that the goal of writing fantasy &#8212; you know, something from his imagination &#8212; he&#8217;d say, let&#8217;s say you wrote about an enchanted forest. The goal would be that then every time you walk into a forest after you read it, you&#8217;d say to yourself, \u2018Maybe this is an enchanted forest.\u2019 So that&#8217;s a tall order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerwig, seemingly answering a question about her goal for the project, answered: \u201cI guess re-enchantment of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She will write and direct at least two Narnia movies, Time reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ted Sarandos, Netflix\u2019s CEO, told Time of the project, \u201cIt won\u2019t be counter to how the audience may have imagined those worlds, but it will be bigger and bolder than they thought.\u201d It will be, he said, \u201crooted in faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerwig told Time she is attracted to the \u201ceuphorically dreamlike\u201d quality of Lewis\u2019 novels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s connected to the folklore and fairy stories of England, but it\u2019s a combination of different traditions,\u201d she said. \u201cAs a child, you accept the whole thing &#8212; that you\u2019re in this land of Narnia, there\u2019s fauns, and then Father Christmas shows up. It doesn\u2019t even occur to you that it\u2019s not schematic.
