Dr. Varkey looks forward to continuing to educate students at ACCD.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In January 2023, Varkey was fired after serving as a biology professor at St. Philip\u2019s College in San Antonio, Texas for 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred after he taught that biological sex is determined by X and Y chromosomes.<\/p>\n<p>According to the college, Varkey participated in \u201creligious preaching\u201d in the classroom, prompting his dismissal.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2023, First Liberty Institute wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/firstliberty.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Letter-from-First-Liberty-6-20-2360_Redacted.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to the Alamo Community College District, which read, \u201cSt. Philip\u2019s College violated Title VII when it terminated Dr. Varkey because of his religious beliefs and protected speech. The only reason the College gave for firing him was the student complaint(s) of \u2018religious preaching, discriminatory comments about homosexuals and transgender individuals, anti-abortion rhetoric, and misogynistic banter.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf not for Dr. Varkey\u2019s beliefs about gender, sexuality, and human life, he would not have been fired.
