Zidor, who is popularly known as Pastor Marco, said in an interview with Mega Radio on Monday, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/haiti-pastor-stands-decision-protest-222629875.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Reuters<\/a>. &#8220;Ninety-five percent of my parishioners were being shot at, none of them got hit,&#8221; he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haitilibre.com\/en\/news-40370-haiti-flash-massacre-of-the-faithful-of-pastor-marco-official-version-of-the-pnh.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press statement<\/a> Monday, Haiti\u2019s Police Chief Frantz Elb\u00e9 said Zidor led several hundred of his followers, some of whom were armed with sticks and machetes, to overthrow the gang controlling a suburb of Port-au-Prince called Canaan.<\/p>\n<p>Elb\u00e9 said police tried to stop the protest by setting up security perimeters and warning church officials that confronting the gang members was not a good idea, but they ignored the warnings. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/at-least-seven-church-members-executed-in-haiti.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In an earlier report<\/a>, The Christian Post noted that Zidor had convinced his parishioners that they could not be harmed by the bullets from the gangsters, and they believed him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were determined because the pastor told them, \u2018They will not get shot,\u2019\u201d Elb\u00e9 said during a subsequent press conference. \u201cThere was a belief in this crowd; Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oF2-ZCjoIu0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">videos posted on YouTube<\/a> show several members who were also kidnapped. Zidor allegedly abandoned his flock on a motorcycle, Haiti Libre reported.<\/p>\n<p>Elb\u00e9 said the execution of churchgoers, who were accompanied by armed men in olive green uniforms, happened after a confrontation, but he did not share any specifics on the confrontation.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday police were still trying to recover an unconfirmed number of bodies but the neighborhood was inaccessible. A local human rights group, CARDH, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/haiti-pastor-stands-by-decision-protest-after-gang-opened-fire-2023-08-28\/#:~:text=At%20least%20seven%20people%20were,area%20is%20not%20currently%20accessible.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Reuters<\/a> the number of dead churchgoers could be as high as 20.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-box align-center center\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><picture width=\"760\" height=\"400\"><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.christianpost.com\/images\/cache\/image\/15\/01\/150114_w_760_400.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.christianpost.com\/images\/cache\/image\/15\/01\/150114_w_760_400.png\" class=\"type:primaryImage\" width=\"760\" height=\"400\"\/><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"caption\"><span class=\"photo-des\">Hundreds of members of the Evangelical Church of the Pool of Bethesda in Caradeux, Haiti, protested gangs on August 26, 2023.<\/span> | <span class=\"credit\">Screenshot: X\/El_TigreNegro<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The massacre of the church members comes as Haiti descends further into lawless gang rule just two years after the assassination of President Jovenel Mo\u00efse.<\/p>\n<p>On July 27, the State Department issued a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/traveladvisories\/traveladvisories\/haiti-travel-advisory.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel advisory<\/a> urging Americans not to travel to Haiti and ordered all U.S. citizens and non-emergency government employees to leave as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>A Level 4 Travel advisory is \u201cthe highest advisory level due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring an emergency, the U.S. government may have very limited ability to provide assistance. The Department of State advises that U.S. citizens not travel to the country or leave as soon as it is safe to do so,&#8221; reads a Safety and Security Information document from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/dam\/NEWTravelAssets\/pdfs\/Safety%20and%20Security%20Information1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the State Department<\/a>. &#8220;The Department of State provides additional advice for travelers in these areas in the Travel Advisory. Conditions in any country may change at any time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haitian citizens frustrated by the lack of security in the country have increasingly turned to self-defense groups and programs but even those efforts are being resisted by the gangs.<\/p>\n<p>Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-briefing-notes\/2023\/08\/haiti-deaths-and-injuries-amid-gang-violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement from Geneva<\/a>\u00a0earlier this month that conditions in Haiti highlight \u201cthe extreme brutality of violence being inflicted on the population and the impact it is having on their human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She noted that between Aug. 14-15, a local government representative and his wife were allegedly shot and killed at their house in Port-au-Prince.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man was apparently targeted in retaliation for his reported support for a local self-defense group set up to confront the gangs,\u201d Shamdasani said.<\/p>\n<p>Hours before they were killed, members of the Grand Ravine gang also reportedly murdered five men and two women from the same family on Aug. 14 by burning them alive inside their home in the Carrefour-Feuilles neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>As the U.N.
