It\u00a0got me thinking about how this issue of emotional intelligence can translate into how we think\u2014and talk\u2014about God, especially when we disagree, which at least on the Internet is most of the time.<\/p>\n Number 4 \u00a0connects with me the most: Emotionally intelligent people\u00a0\u201cdon\u2019t think that being fearful is a sign they are on the wrong path.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n I can \u201ctranslate\u201d this as \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid of possibly being wrong, because being wrong is normal and part of spiritual growth.\u201d<\/p>\n What I like about this post that the focus is on\u00a0us<\/em>\u2014how\u00a0we <\/em>process\u00a0<\/em>the exchange\u2014rather than focusing\u00a0on changing the other. And that reminds me very much of what Richard Rohr and Thomas Keating<\/a> say about binary or hierarchical thinking:<\/p>\n In the spiritual life, there aren\u2019t too many absolutes I can make, but this is certainly one. On the spiritual journey, the message is always to\u00a0you. The message s always telling\u00a0you\u00a0to change.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Now, what most people do is they use religion to try to change\u00a0other\u00a0people. It\u2019s always someone else that needs changing. No. Stop it. Once and for all. Whatever happens to you in your life is a message to\u00a0you.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Oh the ego wants to avoid that. So we look for something out there to change\u2013somebody not like me is always the problem.<\/em><\/p>\n Fr.
