{"id":10313,"date":"2024-02-18T03:02:22","date_gmt":"2024-02-17T21:32:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/18\/minnesota-school-district-allows-muslim-families-to-opt-out-of-lgbt-lessons\/"},"modified":"2024-02-18T03:02:22","modified_gmt":"2024-02-17T21:32:22","slug":"minnesota-school-district-allows-muslim-families-to-opt-out-of-lgbt-lessons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cccfornews.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/18\/minnesota-school-district-allows-muslim-families-to-opt-out-of-lgbt-lessons\/","title":{"rendered":"Minnesota School District Allows Muslim Families To Opt Out Of LGBT\u00a0Lessons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_82\">\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<p>A\u00a0Minneapolis\u00a0school district says it will allow families to opt out of LGBT curriculum materials after several Muslim families threatened to sue.<\/p>\n<p>Somali Muslim families had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sahanjournal.com\/education\/st-louis-park-somali-families-receive-opt-outs-lgbtq-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threatened<\/a>\u00a0to sue St. Louis Park Public School District, claiming that not allowing families to opt out potentially violates the Constitution and state law.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2023, the families\u2019 attorneys sent the district a letter explaining Islamic teachings around gender and sexuality and the parents complaints about the LGBT books.<\/p>\n<p>The families letter said many of the books caused \u201csignificant confusion and distress\u201d to the children.<\/p>\n<p>In a follow up statement, the St. Louis Park district said that it has \u201calways complied with the state law regarding parents\u2019 statutory right to opt out of instructional materials, and we will continue to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpt-outs based on representation of protected classes do not uphold our values of creating safe and inclusive learning and working environments in our schools,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cHowever, because it is required within state law, any change would need to happen with the involvement of state lawmakers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A school district in St. Louis Park, Minnesota has decided to allow families to opt out of LGBT curriculum materials following threats of a lawsuit from Muslim families.
