The stake is about 40% of Audacy\u2019s debt.<\/p>\n
An individual close to the matter told The New York Post<\/a> that the situation is \u201cscary,\u201d as Soros may use the stake to influence public opinion leading up to the 2024 election.<\/p>\n Audacy confirmed the purchase in a statement, writing, \u201cThe decision by our existing and new debtholders to become equity holders in Audacy represents a significant vote of confidence in our company and the future of the radio and audio business.\u201d<\/p>\n The radio chain owns more than 220 stations across the United States.<\/p>\n Last year, Soros\u2019 Open Society Foundations and Swiss billionaire Hansj\u00f6rg Wyss\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0a non-profit that acquired nearly two dozen local Maine newspapers.<\/p>\n An individual with knowledge of the project said\u00a0the billionaires gave millions of dollars to National Trust for the purchase of the Maine newspapers.<\/p>\n National Trust now has five daily newspapers and 17 weekly newspapers.<\/p>\n
